Design demand up slightly in June
AIA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While business conditions remained weak at the majority of architecture firms in June, firms with a commercial/industrial specialization posted small gains for the second month in a row. However, concerns about a possible double-dip recession continue to grow amid other negative indicators. Amid growing concern about another downturn, the recently released Consensus Construction Forecast indicates a small recovery in construction spending by the end of 2011, making it more likely that firm billings will begin to improve in the near future. Inquiries at architecture firms remain elevated as owners continue to solicit many bids for their projects. More

Symposium explores social change role for museums
Change Observer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From April 12, through April 14, 2010, 22 designers, historians, curators, educators and journalists met at Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center on Lake Como, in Italy, to discuss the museum’s role in the 21st century in relation to design for social change. The Rockefeller Foundation recently released a report on the symposium, which was organized by the Winterhouse Institute. The symposium grew out of an observation that despite efforts to highlight design as an outgrowth of custom and a vivid reflection of community, very few museums concern themselves with social change. Instead, they are traditionally associated with high aesthetics, encapsulated in everything from Mackintosh chairs to Alessi teapots. More

Design lessons learned from inpatient experience
Institute for Patient-Centered Design, Inc.    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Institute for Patient-Centered Design has developed a series to help designers better understand patient needs by vicariously undergoing an inpatient experience. Often, designers find themselves working with limited information about patients. This series will offer new lessons regularly that explain the commonly overlooked details of seeking medical treatment and how these factors may be influenced by the built environment. Written by designers and for designers, the lessons include valuable input from interviews with patients and clinicians. More

Cabinetry only as sustainable as the sum of its parts
EcoHome Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While cabinets may seem simple, multiple components affect resource efficiency and indoor air quality, requiring careful consideration during selection. When selecting cabinetry for a green-built home, dedicated research is required to break the products down and evaluate the origins of the wood used to make the raw materials, the resins that bind them, the chemical content of the glues used to adhere the parts together, and the VOC levels of finishes. Chipotle found in violation of disabilities act
Washington Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A federal appeals court in California has ruled that the Chipotle Mexican Grill chain's "distinct interior design" is also illegal. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled that two restaurants in San Diego violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) because the counters where the staff prepared tacos and burritos were too high and blocked the view for people in wheelchairs. Chipotle said the company has voluntarily retrofitted all of its restaurants in California with a counter design to allow for wheelchair accessibility. More
