How lean relates to healthcare design
Healthcare Design Magazine    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Lean in regards to healthcare is based upon getting rid of waste and inefficiency. If a hospital wants to go "Lean", they look at things such as ways to eliminate processes that are unnecessary in the overall quality and value-adding activities. The main categories Lean looks to improve upon are productivity, cost, quality, and timely delivery of services. There are at least three areas in design and design process that we can consider in order to achieve some of those areas of improvement: space planning, design in regards to the quality of the patient experience, and integrated project delivery. Accessibility concerns rise as US home sizes decline
Kitchen & Bath Design News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The prolonged downturn in the U.S. economy and the nation's housing market, coupled with growing concerns about rising utility costs, has resulted in greater interest among consumers in smaller homes, the most recent Home Design Trends survey by the American Institute of Architects concludes. The growing desire for smaller homes is being accompanied by broader lifestyle changes, with U.S. households eschewing upscale amenities and opting instead to invest in more low-maintenance projects, particularly for property improvements. Accessibility within the home continues to be a concern, especially for an aging population, and there is an increasing demand for more flexible design and informal space within homes. More

Universally designed prefab home offers "invisible accessibility"
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From stepless, seamless entries to modern, open floor plans, the FabCab pre-fabricated home is designed to appeal to aging baby boomers, who want the amenities and functionality of Universal Design features but in a stylish and inconspicuous setting. Founder Emory Baldwin likes to think of FabCab's design as "invisible accessibility," and some potential clients actually have a hard time seeing the major differences from a conventional home. More

Around the globe, many shades of green
GreenSource Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Worldwide, green-building certification systems have many differences, large and small, and a building evaluated by one may fare differently if evaluated by another. Some, like Britain's BREEAM and USGBC's LEED, have been around for many years. Others have been developed more recently and reflect current thinking about sustainability, leading to more stringent standards. More

#1 Complaint in Green Buildings
What's the number one complaint in green buildings? Poor acoustics. Post occupancy surveys show that respondents are dissatisfied with being able to overhear others talking, as well as with their own level of speech privacy. And over 50 percent state that noise hinders their work. What can you do? MORE

Green behaviors shift from activism to lifestyle
Custom Home Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Consumer interest in green and energy-efficient housing has declined with the rest of the housing market, according to the 2010 Green Living Pulse market study. Consumers don't really understand the differences between green homes and energy-efficient homes, the study found, and in today’s economy are reluctant to spend more for green features. Likewise, they mostly are making only the easiest and least costly green changes to their homes, such as replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents or LEDs and purchasing Energy Star-qualified appliances and electronics. For many consumers, the study concludes, going green is not about saving the planet; it's about improving their lifestyles and comfort and saving money. More

Expert hired to protect work of Frank Lloyd Wright
The Arizona Republic    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has hired archive expert Nicholas Olsberg to suggest ways to protect and share thousands of documents left behind by the legendary architect that are considered priceless works of art and a valuable resource for scholars. The 22,000 drawings, 40,000 photographs and 300,000 pieces of correspondence now are housed in a plain space the size of a utility closet at Taliesin West. One suggestion Olsberg expects to make is that portions of the collection be made available online. More

The Green Soundscape:
Addressing Acoustics in Sustainable Offices

For many, the term 'green building' means one that wastes minimal resources. However, in order to be successful, these must also be environments in which employees can thrive and productivity can soar. Acoustics are key to both comfort and concentration. However, sustainable designs often perform poorly in this area. Why?

Personal safety key to bedroom design
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Researchers studying sleeping place preferences found that, in accordance to evolutionary theories of design, study participants asked to position a bed and other furniture on a floor plan, predominantly positioned the bed in a way that (a) allowed them to see the door, (b) was as distant as possible from the door, and (c) was on the side of the room toward which the door opened [this means that a person in bed would not be seen immediately when the door is opened]. The findings have repercussions for the design of sleeping spaces in homes, hospitals and hotels and also provide insights into the design of other spaces where it is desirable for people to feel comfortable. IKEA designs the ultra-efficient kitchen of the future
Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What high-tech gizmos will we see in the kitchens of the future? IKEA may have the answers. The Swedish superstore recently drew up a concept kitchen for the year 2040, and it's pretty wild. It features self-cleaning kitchen counters, 3D holographic displays, cabinets on rails, a "sixth-generation" iPad, remote-controlled ovens, and a host of ultra-efficient energy-saving systems. More
