The scrunchies you adored in middle school probably cause you to shriek in horror today. As we grow, so does our fashion sense (hopefully). Does the same go for decor preferences? Interior design startup Modsy, which helps its users visualize potential new furniture in their real-life rooms, decided to find out. The platform analyzed user data based on its free style quiz, and quickly discovered that just like the proper bedtime or the appropriate length of shorts, the young and old see interior design styles differently.

It's a truth universally acknowledged (at least by Paula Abdul and MC Skat Kat) that when it comes to love, opposites attract. What’s less well-known is that this aphorism also applies to architecture. A decade after opening Houston’s Chateau Domingue and building it up to become one of the leading suppliers of European architectural antiques in Houston and throughout the country, Ruth Gay was on a buying trip to Italy and found herself drawn to an unexpected juxtaposition: historic stone buildings accented with sleek, low-profile steel doors and windows.

August is a great month. The reason I say that is because it's the last blast for summer. As we approach the last days of hot weather and start thinking about what lies ahead, we realize that slowing down during the summer is OK. It gives us a chance to recharge and spend time away from our desks. The design business is known for its feast-or-famine work cycles. Summer is a slow time, but the fall is when projects start to again gain momentum.

Back in 1973, the average American home was 1,660 square feet — the average household size, 3.01 people. Today, there are 2.54 people living in a house. After all, research has shown that connection with nature and the outdoors can lead to lower stress levels, and higher levels of productivity.

Architects, developers, brokers, and interior designers often have to help their clients and prospective buyers envision a space that doesn’t exist yet. The traditional way to do this involved drawings made on drafting tables and hand-crafted models. However, technology has dramatically changed customer expectations, and over the past two decades glossy, photorealistic renderings have supplanted drawings.

A simple color change can update your kitchen in a major way. The right shade of grey, for example, can turn the room from drab to sleek and sophisticated. Finessing the right hue of red, meanwhile, can take it from lackluster to perfectly dramatic. Here, interior designers share their favorite shades of paint for the kitchen so you can spend less time looking at swatches and more time enjoying your newly-designed space.

Contemporary design has embraced minimalism with clean, unadorned interiors defining the thought process of the 21st century designer with a ‘less is more’ attitude. The classic fireplace with its bulky looks and lack of design flexibility didn’t quite fit the vision for modern designers. Contemporary gas fireplaces with their sleek and slimline looks, large glass viewing areas, convenient, easy operation, and a wide range of options to match any interior, are meeting the design goals of modern homes.

We are living in the Golden Age of restaurants. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Americans spend nearly half of their food budget eating at restaurants, rather than shopping at grocery stores. This fact stands in stark contrast to the greater trend in retail, which shows brick-and-mortar storefronts struggling against online competition and skyrocketing rent. Yet, success in the restaurant business is far from guaranteed. With more options for high quality food than ever before, restaurants new and old are rethinking their place in urban settings.

There are two lines at Cha Cha Matcha, a small cafe on a busy corner of NoLita in Manhattan. The first one is where you wait to buy matcha, a whipped green tea drink that is de rigeur among food-trend fetishizing millennials, in the manifold formats the cafe has on offer. (Latte, cappuccino, lemonade, splashed with coconut milk if that’s your thing, for about five bucks a cup.)
The other line is a little harder to describe, but is something akin to those groups of kids at Disneyland waiting to take a picture with their favorite animated character, except a lot more fashionable and marginally better behaved.
