Branding with light
Research Design Connections    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The ability of light to communicate nonverbally and influence mood is becoming more widely known. A recent research study concludes that utilization of consistent lighting concepts "reflects a brand identity." The study design eliminated the influence of specific luminaires on brand assessments: "The significant impression can be made just with the light alone," the study found. In addition, "The aspect of brightness, although much discussed in lighting research, actually only plays a subordinate role" in the branding process. More

Personal lighting control and energy savings
InformeDesign    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Previous research suggests that building users prefer more environmental control, often linking it to health, comfort, and performance benefits. A study conducted in a daylighting laboratory found, in addition, that users in daylit offices preferred controls that allow them to reduce lighting levels during certain times of the day over those that maintain a constant lighting environment, thus potentially resulting in energy savings. New website catalogs eco-certifications
EcoHome Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new online database aims to help companies and consumers navigate claims of environmental certifications and labels for a range of products. The searchable 2010 Global Ecolabel Monitor by the World Resources Institute studied 340 labeling programs and found they employ a variety of strategies to ensure credibility. The analysis also revealed that programs run by nonprofits generally have more rigorous requirements, such as site visits, audits, and third-party certifications. More

Reinventing the learning environment
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In keeping with the Danish government’s new vision for secondary school reform, 3XN, an architectural firm based in Copenhagen, created a radically different learning environment for Ørestad College. Organized around a central staircase and atrium, the boomerang-shaped floor plates spin and shift like a camera shutter to create four distinct learning zones. The prototypical factory model with its self-contained classrooms is replaced by an environment that features a diversity of spaces that flow into one another designed to promote reflective, collaborative learning. Weak architecture billings continue in July
Architect Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Following a two-month soft patch, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) rose almost two full points in July. The AIA reported the July ABI score was 47.9, up from a reading of 46.0 the previous month. This score reflects a continued decline in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index dropped substantially from 57.7 to 53.1. New home sales fall to record low
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sales of new homes unexpectedly sank 12.4 percent in July to the lowest point since government records starting being kept in 1963. It underscored continued weakness in the housing market, which tanked after the expiration this spring of a tax break for home buyers who were already facing a stagnant job market. The Commerce Department said that new single-family houses in July were sold at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 276,000 units. It marked a 32.4 percent drop from the same month a year ago. More

Impact of recession on design firms hard to measure
Interiors & Sources    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In the last two years, countless A/E firm have perished during the deep recession; however, experts agree, no one seems to know exactly how many, according to The Zweig Letter, ZweigWhite's flagship publication. Given the often-quoted estimate pointing to the existence of more than 20,000 architecture firms in the Unites States (AIA lists 18,500 member-owned architecture firms in its membership, but the number of firms is certainly higher, taking into account those not affiliated with AIA), that would mean that up to 2,200 firms may have disappeared into thin air. Amazing Japanese micro house is only 10 feet wide inside
Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
The Showa-cho House in Osaka, Japan, is an amazingly airy residence despite its miniscule 59 x 13-foot lot. Architect Fujiwara Muro made incredible use of the limited space available by building up and splitting the home in half with a staircase, which acts as both a transition space and delineates the private and public sides of the home without a wall. Plenty of daylight flows in, and a simplified modern interior streamlines the space, adding a tranquil feeling to a home dictated by a ten foot-wide interior dimension. More
