Some Good News for the Housing Market

New U.S. home sales surged 9.6 percent in July, rising for the fourth straight month and beating expectations as the housing market marches steadily back from its historic downturn. The Commerce Department said Wednesday that sales rose to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 433,000 from an upwardly revised June rate of 395,000. Sales are now up 32 percent from the bottom in January, but off 69 percent from the frenzied peak four years ago. In related news, for the first time in five years, existing-home sales have increased for four months in a row, according to the National Association of Realtors®. More    E-mail article

Cornell Project Seeks to Identify Interior Design Archetypes

Cornell University recently announced the launch of Intypes, which is short for the Interior Archetypes Research and Teaching Project, a concept that professor Jan Jennings has been working on since the 1990s. The project is the first of its kind to assemble contemporary design theory in a searchable, online database that includes imagery from real buildings. Architecture Billings Index Bounces Back After Substantial Dip

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI), a leading economic indicator of construction activity, was up almost 6 points in July following a 5-point dip the previous month. The ABI reflects the approximate 9 to 12 month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported that the July ABI rating was 43.1, up significantly from 37.7 the month prior, but still indicating a decline in demand for design services. Exhibition Spotlights Celebrated Herman Miller Design Process

The Muskegon Museum of Art, Mich., announced its creation of a traveling design exhibition, Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller. The exhibition opens in Muskegon on August 20, 2009, and will subsequently tour as many as 15 American cities into 2013. Hotel Chains Report Declining Rates, Revenue

Multibrand hotel companies are reporting significant year-over-year drops in rates and revenue for the second quarter of 2009, as industry analysts continue to move expectations for the year downward.
