Overcoming the tyranny of the cubicle
Research Design Connections    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What are the costs of using 20th century spaces to do 21st century knowledge work? Lost productivity, higher capital expenses and inaccessible managers, say consultants who researched the office design of the headquarters for the pharmaceutical company Lilly. Cubicle based environments reduce productivity and increase dissatisfaction, they found. By reducing the amount of assigned space and increasing the amount of shared and temporary, unassigned space, Lilly saw workers' satisfaction with their workspace almost double, associated capital costs nearly cut in half and the amount of time lost to distractions, waiting, looking for meeting rooms and the like decrease by 16 percent. The building will be green on the inside, too. Residential units will feature Energy Star-rated lighting, windows and appliances, as well as water-efficient fixtures and toilets. Finishes featuring low-emitting materials will reduce contaminants, and the air quality will benefit further from the fact that Foursquare will be a smoke-free community. More

The Bolshoi resurrection
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Once the pride of Moscow, the Bolshoi had become a crumbling ornamental shell. After a painstaking $720 million artisanal overhaul, the home of the world's best ballerinas can once again command an imperial audience. The project has spared no expense — from chandeliers to artisanal gold leaf and embroidered silks — in restoring the Bolshoi's grand public spaces to their original 19th century design. Thanks to The Wall Street Journal, you don't have to wait until the grand opening to get an inside look. More

It's all in the details
Healthcare Design Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An enormous amount of coordination and detail is required to design a medical facility. However, many of the details most important to patients, visitors and staff — such as furniture locations with optimum views; nurse stations with convenient computers, printers, phones and storage; exam tables with the proper relationship to wall-hung diagnostic instruments and required electrical outlets, etc. — are most often neglected during the project planning phase. These oversights can result in a less-than-stellar final product that is completed late with multiple change orders and budget overages. The best way to secure a successful outcome is to integrate the design of furniture, fixtures and equipment at the very beginning. More Artwork Done Right

Mindful sanctuaries
Kitchen & Bath Design News    Share    Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The bath remains of key importance to consumers seeking refuge from the stresses of day-to-day life. And the water experience — often defined by the luxury shower — continues to be an important part of creating that spa-like haven. At the same time, the growing interest in water conservation is impacting the shower and tub market. But while the two trends may seem at odds, new technology has made it possible to have a drenching water experience with less water, satisfying both performance needs and water conservation mandates. Advice for discussing design rates, fees, and budgets with clients
Elle Decor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Helping a client understand the cost of services can be a challenge, since much of a designer's work is intangible — a client pays for a designer's style and sensibility, not a product that can be immediately seen or touched. Here's a guide to help you understand when to discuss rates with a client, how to do so gracefully, and why it's essential to demystify the design process to make the deal. More
