There are lots of reasons people don't hire interior designers, but chief among them is perceived price. "There's a common perception of professional interior design as being something that's totally out of reach on the average income," says Emily Carding, co-founder of a new startup, Designbx.

It's no secret that certain colors make a tried-and-true design statement: Black-and-white rooms never go out of style, red rooms command attention, and green spaces are practically guaranteed to help you put your feet up and relax. But according to a report from Zillow Digs, there are four paint colors that make real estate pros nervous – and for good reason. When the real estate site evaluated more than 50,000 photos of recently sold homes, it found that houses with rooms painted certain colors fetched less than their estimated prices.

Sherwin-Williams has selected Poised Taupe (SW 6039) as the 2017 Color of the Year. The color indicates an overall desire for neutrals that bring warm and cool tones together, creating versatility. “Poised Taupe celebrates everything people love about cool gray as a neutral, and also brings in the warmth of brown, taking a color to an entirely new level. Not cool or warm, nor gray or brown, Poised Taupe is a weathered, woodsy neutral bringing a sense of coziness and harmony that people are seeking,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams.

One piece of advice I always give to designers who want help with marketing and growing their business is to identify their “ideal client” and focus their efforts there. No matter how good a designer you are, you can’t be all things to all people. We all have our strengths and our weaknesses, our preferences and our passions. Decide what you like to do and are really good at, and go after that customer.

Slow but steady is the current prognosis for the housing industry. Housing starts are up for the first seven months of the year, but month-to-month gains have remained flat for the past four months. Meanwhile, requests for single-family permits have declined, which could mean fewer new starts in the months ahead. Nonetheless, builders and housing experts expect the industry will continue to experience modest growth in the second half of the year.

There is a wonderful quote I found that states: “Be decisive. Right or wrong, make a decision. The road of life is paved with flat squirrels who couldn’t make a decision” (author unknown). How quickly do you make decisions? Too often we see designers who get so frustrated with clients who can’t make decisions (a quick decision-maker might be something to add to your "ideal client" profile!), and yet those same designers may not have stopped to realize that they are not quick decision-makers for their own business. They may be plagued by what we often refer to as "analysis paralysis" – or overanalyzing and overresearching the situation.

Fashion, décor, and TV programming all change with the season. So should your marketing. I’m not suggesting that you should cater to every trend promoted in every home and lifestyle magazine or website (although it’s always good to know who’s influencing your clients’ ideas about design). It’s not your design that needs adjusting. It’s how you promote your services that could use a refresh.

According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, an environmental and social research organization, wind energy is the fastest-growing source of alternative electricity in the world. Large wind farms have been used for city power, but not as much for residential areas. That’s because it takes enormous wind turbines that can be as tall as a five-story building, and almost as wide, to generate enough electricity to make the investment worth it.

Mudrooms are the ugly ducklings of the home. Purely functional, the dirt and sloppiness are so integrated and expected in this room that “mud” is a part of its very name. While the romance of a grand, sweeping foyer is undeniable, equally undeniable is the reality of boots, snow gear, and trudging children with backpacks, eventually necessitating an offset area or “secondary” (we all know it’s really the primary) entrance. For so long, mudrooms were hidden behind closed doors, full of dirt, disorganization and shame; but the ugly duckling has grown up, and this swan is ready to dazzle with everything it can do.

August brings hot temperatures, quick summer getaways, and lazy days by the pool. It also brings doctor’s appointments, class schedules, and trips to the office supply store as parents and their children prepare for the new school year. Whether students are already nestled back behind their desks or still jumping into the pool for last-minute summer fun, each one will be guaranteed to be given homework at some point during the school year. This means that students will not only need a place to complete their algebra equations and write an essay about Napoleon, but they will also need a place to store their backpacks, lunchbags, and school supplies.

If you stand in the hallway of a hospital unit, what do you hear?
On any given day, most facilities’ floors are filled with an array of noises caused by paging, code alerts, medical equipment, footsteps, and conversations. Yet there’s an increased awareness that such sounds, if left unchecked, can be harmful to the health of patients, staff, and healthcare organizations.

Heading back to school is a familiar fall ritual for most kids, one that's filled with excitement for the year ahead and lament for the end of summer vacation. But at the newly rebuilt Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, it'll also be imbued with the emotional weight of the shooting on December 14, 2012, that killed 20 children and eight adults in one of the worst acts of violence in U.S. history.

In the 1960s and '70s, the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi gave pagers to study subjects ranging from motorcycle gang members to sheepherders. When the pagers buzzed, the participants' job was to record their happiness levels. These studies ushered in the modern era of happiness research (and gave birth to an idea you’ve probably heard about—the times when productive hours float by like minutes in "flow").

The concept was chosen for its “incisive interest in the connections between landscape, culture, and architecture as observed through the frame of a singular architectural and landscape typology,” the Australian Institute of Architects explained when it announced the winning proposal for the nation’s pavilion at “La Biennale di Venezia.” All true. But you wouldn’t guess from that dryly academic description that the Venice installation is also playful, seductive, and wet.
