Health, safety, and basic consideration for others have gained new attention and importance. Safeguard Your Designs to Avoid Theft, Lawsuit
By Lloyd Princeton
Whether it's vetting a design concept or solving problems on site, design projects take teamwork and team thinking. Many individuals may contribute to the final design and implementation. At the end of the day, though, it should be clear to all involved who owns the project and the rights to all concepts, sketches, renderings, presentation boards, photographs, etc. Otherwise, you could find yourself the victim of design theft or embroiled in a lawsuit.

Handling the Questions You Hate to Hear
InteriorDesignBusiness.net
A meeting with a client or prospect is rarely a time for impromptu brilliance. You’re not likely to come up with a knock-their-socks-off response to a question out of nowhere. Approach meetings hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. Expect the unexpected, and craft, ahead of time, good answers to lousy questions. Don’t let tough questions tie you up, bring you down, and stress you out. Create a list of your killer questions — and a cheat sheet of answers to them.

Do Green Buzzwords Work on Consumers?
GreenBiz
As part of this year’s Eco Pulse survey, the Shelton Group decided to take the American pulse when it comes to green buzzwords, to find out whether they really have mainstream appeal, whether consumers really get what they mean, and whether some of them actually turn consumers off. Among other responses, they found you may turn customers off completely by using jargon, even if they want what you’re selling. “Low-VOC,” for example, was a real stinker in terms of consumer desirability — a majority actually gave it a negative rating — but when they asked respondents how they felt about indoor air quality, they got a completely different picture.

Learning from Nature
Human Spaces
Research demonstrates that attentional capacity (which is essential for cognitive functioning) is restored when children/students engage with nature. This means they are less easily distracted and are more able to manage daily tasks. If we as architects and interior designers want to apply biophilic principles in educational settings, we need to consider how spaces can incorporate natural elements or take advantage of limited exterior spaces.

Good Design Can Combat Open-Office Issues
Building Design+Construction
According to the International Facilities Management Association (IFMA), more than 70 percent of American employees now work in an open office, a huge jump from just a decade ago, so issues were bound to arise as the trend became more pervasive. But the reality is that most people don’t like traditional cubicles, and it’s not feasible (nor advantageous) for every company to provide private, closed office space for every employee. Open offices are a great solution, but only if they’re done the right way. Let’s take a look at a few of the most common issues arising in open offices and explore the ways that good design (and good management) can help mitigate those challenges.

Paint Colors for Long-term Care Settings
McKnight's Long-Term Care News
While an extensive study of the literature on color theory and practice in healthcare published during the last 50 years concluded that there's insufficient evidence to evoke a certain mood, and there's not enough evidence to link specific colors to particular health outcomes, the current color design trend is to use hues that are found in the natural setting around the facility and/or have particular relevance within the local culture.
