Interior Design Billings Remain Positive for Second Quarter

The June 2014 ASID Interior Design Billings Index showed increased revenue growth for the second quarter of 2014. Business conditions for the design industry have shown positive momentum in recent months, although June's ASID IDBI reflected slight declines in billings and inquiries. June's IDBI of 55.8 dipped from May's recent high of 65.9, but was higher than March's 52.7. The IDBI has been above 50 for 9 of the past 10 quarters.

Bathing Habits Reveal U.S. Consumer Temperature

According to a recent survey commissioned by Delta Faucet, 91 percent of Americans test the water temperature of their shower or bath before getting in. "Through consumer research, we learned about the desire for temperature readings in the bathroom that could help in conserving water and avoiding cold or hot surprises," said Paul Patton, senior research and development and regulatory manager for Delta Faucet Company.

A team of researchers has comprehensively assessed ergonomics-related problems experienced by people over 60 in their home kitchens. Highlights of their study: "Personal problems with reaching, bending, dexterity and sight were more likely to be experienced with increasing age, while for specific tasks, ironing and cleaning created the most difficulty." Homeowners Have Big Interior Design Plans

Only 2 percent of more than 1,700 homeowners in the U.S. and Canada surveyed recently by the remodeling website Houzz say they have achieved their design vision for their homes. On average, most homeowners say they're only halfway there with the home's décor.

Chemical Industry, USGBC Announce Ceasefire

After years of anti-LEED lobbying, the American Chemistry Council says it wants to work to make LEED better. Anne Kolton, ACC's vice president of communications, told Environmental Building News, "We started to discover over time that they have certain areas of expertise — sustainability and green building — and we have certain areas of expertise — life-cycle analysis, risk-based analysis and the efficacy and durability of building materials. We wanted to work together to bring those two different sets of expertise to the table."

What Kind of Prison Might the Inmates Design?
