Offering a holistic vision of design for the aging
Fast Company    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
A multidisciplinary field involving sociologists, urban planners, and psychologists has sprung up to answer questions of whether architecture and design can aid the elderly, one of the fastest growing demographics in the developed world. At the forefront is University of Pennsylvania professor Matthias Hollwich, who initiated a partnership with the Bauhaus to envision the ideal, age-sensitive city of the future, the Geropolis. Range of visual aids needed to convey school design projects
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Using multiple types of visual tools in a school design project is a good idea, according to a study published in the journal, Learning Environment Research. Through an in depth case study of the design of a secondary school, the researchers determined that "Using a range of visual methods [based on photographs and maps] allows a complex, but coherent understanding of the particular school environment to be constructed and developed. It is further argued that such a range of visual and spatial methods is needed to develop appropriate understanding." More

New eco-flooring made from furniture scraps
TreeHugger    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Bamboo is round and hollow while floors are flat and solid, so to make bamboo floors they cut the stuff up into strips and compress it with resin into solid chunks that can be sliced into flooring. They make a lot of it in China; they also make a lot of regular furniture and produce a lot of waste. Somebody had the idea of taking that scrap and compressing it into chunks and voila: EcoTimber Strand Poplar Flooring was born. More

Making the case for and against a design degree
Contract    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Given the circumstances in today's market, is it time to change the path of interior design education entirely? That is the question guest blogger Stacy Straczynski put to the readers of Contract magazine last week. She cites the example of one recent A&D grad who points out that employers are not willing to pay new designers with degrees a livable wage and that many paths are open to becoming a designer. More

Former dorm goes upscale
Boston Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A former Emerson College dormitory has been transformed into 16 luxury Back Bay condos, thanks to a gut renovation overseen by Boston architect Guy Grassi. Originally built as an apartment building, 100 Beacon St. served as an Emerson dorm from the early 1960s until 2006. Grassi added a limestone cornice, friezes and balconies that the original design had called for but which were never actually installed. The end result: a set of elegant condos that boast fine finishes such as limestone bathrooms, custom sapele cabinets and sewn-oak floors. More

Kitchen and bath design takes its cues from haute couture
Kitchen and Bath Business    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The line between fashion design and home décor is a fine one. Each reflects and informs the other, expressing the mood and attitude of the times. Industry research found that people who were up on fashion cared more about their home interiors and were willing to spend more. Fashion is aspirational, an invention of one's personality. The study found that if people paid attention to their clothing, they paid attention to their homes because they viewed their interiors as reflections of them. More

Specialized lids encourage recycling compliance
InformeDesign    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Findings published in a recent issue of the journal, Environment and Behavior, indicate that using specialized lids that give cues to the types of materials (e.g., waste, paper, aluminum) each receptacle is supposed to hold in public spaces can encourage higher rates of recycling. In addition, the lids may reduce the quantity of waste and associated costs for disposal, reduce the need for staff to sort waste and recyclables, and serve as an inexpensive way to encourage environmental practices.
