The art of understatement
Architectural Record    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An antidote to the growing cacophony of visual noise surrounding us, Architectural Record's 2012 Record Interiors features seven projects that are refreshingly quiet, focused and well-crafted. Homing in on what's essential, the designers and architects are unapologetically minimalist in their strategies. Each solution is uniquely tailored to its client, program and context — 19th- and 20th-century landmarks, a high-rise apartment, a new industrial-style structure and a commercial space — fusing with the existing architecture but never overshadowing it. The cult of disappearing design
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
More than simply stashing your stereo in a closet or throwing a shawl over your ottoman, the all-invisible aesthetic aims for a higher-minded goal: creating unified spaces that flow from room to room and place to place. Driven by technology and old-fashioned ingenuity, such design pursues goals like "zero sightlines" (fixtures that can't be seen in profile) as well as creating seamless — and shadowless — surfaces. Everlasting evidence: Emails are forever
Home Channel News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Electronic evidence discovery has become an integral part of the process of preparing legal cases — for plaintiffs and for defendants. Emails and other information placed on the Internet, intranets and local servers aren't easily destroyed or shredded like hard-copy records. Electronic files are typically stored on backup servers and, even if deleted from a server or computer hard drive, leave residual traces that computer forensic specialists can recover. More

Hospitality Style    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many young design professionals come into their first job with more experience with aesthetics than spreadsheets. After all, design schools do have a tendency to make the creative aspect and the related deliverables "the most important thing in the world" — and that mantra goes on for four or five years. Then, as they settle in to a firm where they want to be for a while, young design professionals begin to recognize the difference between the design business and the business of design. More
