Beyond Aesthetics: The Role of Art in Design
Interiors & Sources
When we think about art in interior design, our mind may gravitate to images of canvases and prints hanging on a wall in some undefined office space, hotel room, or waiting area. Art, from this perspective, serves as mere decoration, a way to fill a visual vacuum. Of course, art is much more than that. The impact of art on the human experience runs much deeper than mere surface appeal.

Scent Design: An Aromatic Approach to Interiors
Sourceable
Scent design is gaining mainstream market momentum with commercial, retail, hospitality, and even residential clients opting for fragrant spaces. It’s not as simple as a fragrance plug-in, and is unlike the strategy of supermarkets injecting bakery smells for sales or the popcorn aroma at the cinema. This new scent wave is known as olfactive branding. In olfactive branding, a scent developed from the olfactive process is customized and is aligned to a brand strategy or the “feeling” a company may want consumers to evoke when they enter the space.

How to Craft a Compelling Cover Letter
Design Management Company
One of the most frequent complaints of principals, owners, and hiring managers regarding the applications they receive is the poor quality of cover letters. Today’s automated job search services make it easy for candidates to upload a generic cover letter and resume and shotgun them to a dozen or so firms in the hopes of scoring a match or two. Not a good strategy. The cover letter is your personal introduction to the person who is hiring. It needs to be customized to address the particular business of the firm and duties of the position for which you’re applying.

Can "Good" and "Cheap" Co-Exist?
Remodeling
The remodeling industry is ripe for easy, good, and cheap. Amazon, Porch, Angie's List –all are trying to be the go-to provider for easy, good, and cheap home improvements. They are powerful, well-funded organizations that have tremendous track records of success. They will get press. They will get demand. But if they treat remodeling as a commodity—as a product instead of a service—they ultimately will fail.

Duluth News Tribune
A bit of black is almost a cure-all for an uninspired space, Hudson interior designer Candace Sveda says. "If somebody says, 'What's wrong with this room?' most of the time you can look at it and say, 'It just needs a little bit of black.'" A touch of black can add intrigue, sophistication, and even mystery to a decorating scheme, inside or out.

Shhh! 6 Ways to Keep Noise Down in New and Existing Hospitals
Building Design+Construction
The average noise level in U.S. hospitals has risen from 40 db in the 1960s, to around 70 db today. In some hospitals, noise levels have been measured as equal to the screeching of a subway train at 200 feet. Research has shown that noise reduction is a relatively easy metric. Restaurants Take the Din Out of Dining
The New York Times
After years of paying lip service to the idea of fostering civilized conversation over deafening clatter (and maybe throwing down a few rugs as a quick remedy), some restaurateurs appear to be listening to customers’ pleas. Acoustic buffers and panels are nothing new, but restaurant designers are becoming more precise and scientific, working to create self-enclosed huddles of talk at each table without losing the low rumble of activity that makes a place feel alive.
