AIA billings index rises in August
Architect    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
On the heels of a period of weakness in design activity, the Architecture Billings Index took a sudden upturn in August. The American Institute of Architects reported the August ABI score was 51.4, following a very weak score of 45.1 in July. This score reflects an increase in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 56.9, up sharply from a reading of 53.7 the previous month. More

A design for healing
Express Healthcare    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A patient and his/her family would be better served by a health care system that was optimized around healing, rather than delivery. The built environment would contribute much more to a patient's healing process. The design approach to create a therapeutic healing environment stretches from the built form to the minute details of interior design as the same sends a positive message to the surroundings. More

Wine cellars, 2011 style
AGBeat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Wine cellars don't have to be in a dungeon — nor do they have to be in a cellar. Homebuilders are including wine cellars in various new homes throughout America, and homeowners are adding wine storage in unlikely places: closets, halls, office areas, basements and the like. More

MESSAGE FROM ASID
Greenbuild for Interior Designers (at last!)

The lack of attention paid to interior designers at Greenbuild has, over the years, ranged from blatant disregard to cursory acknowledgment. Take heart, designers: This year three organizations are joining together to provide a special event developed specifically for you. The Healthy Building Network, BuildingGreen and the ASID Foundation invite you to Interior Designers At the Forefront: Healthy Products & Healthy Building, a forum that addresses the real and practical needs of interior designers (and others — architects, engineers, product manufacturers) responsible for creating spaces that are healthier for occupants and the planet.

Join us for this provocative forum on Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the Nova Scotia Room at Toronto's Fairmont Royal York Hotel at 3 p.m., just prior to the grand opening of the exhibit hall. Admission is free. For additional details about the forum and interior design topics at Greenbuild, click here.

Keep up with all the ASID news on our ASID ICON News page online.

Think outside the box, inside the wall
K+BB    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As a designer, if you look behind the wall at the parts that are never seen but make plumbing fixtures and appliances actually work, you likely are an exception. Most designers (and this is not a criticism) don't do this because it has never been considered their business. However, there is a lot that can go on behind the wall that can benefit both you and your contractor/partner. More

The 'live-in kitchen' concept
Kitchen & Bath Design News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ellen Cheever writes, "Several years ago, I began experimenting with a new kitchen layout strategy aimed at better integrating family activities and the primary storage/preparation/cooking work centers into one large living space. This new approach revolves around changing where these traditional work centers are placed within an expanded roomscape still labeled as a kitchen. I call it the 'live-in kitchen' plan, rather than an eat-in kitchen or a great room kitchen." More
