Bamboo or hardwood—which should you use?
Residential Architect    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

This rapid growth has made it one of the darlings of the green building world. However, many of the environmental benefits of bamboo are shared by wood. Natural regeneration is not limited to bamboo stands; it is a viable and widely used practice in tree forestry also. The longer rotation times for trees compared to bamboo can actually be considered to be an advantage for wood. In fact, there are many pros and cons for using each. More

Employees take office design home with them
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It seems logical that the physical design of workplaces where people spend their days should have ramifications for workers' well-being after they leave them. Now a study to be published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology has found that higher levels of discomfort at the workplace were linked with poorer quality sleep in employees. Physical and psychological discomfort were measured with survey questions concerning concentration problems, easily tired, dullness, irritability, headache, bad vision, dry throat, dry eyes, irritated skin, and sniffles. Why pod hotels are so hot right now
News.com.au    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tiny hotel rooms are popping up all over the world, with many reporting great success. Pod hotels can generate higher returns on real estate investment. And by their very nature, they're not service oriented, so they have low requirements for staffing. Their minimalist design recalls the interior of a plane, but many promise "micro-luxury:" air conditioning, a safe, a flat-screen television and free Wi-Fi. More
