The design of formal and informal learning environments (classrooms, laboratories, offices, libraries,
homes, exhibitions, etc.) must facilitate our acquisition of knowledge and the sharpening of our
competitive edge. How does design impact learning and how can we design spaces that optimize the learning experience? This year’s grants will fund evidence-based research on the impact of interior
design on learning performance and/or the learning experience.

Today, nine out of ten prospective buyers rely largely on the Internet while searching for a home. Online discovery is huge when shopping for real estate, but people must rely on static photographs, descriptions, and CGI models to get a feel for their future investment. Archilogic’s interactive webGL models let shoppers virtually modify homes, add or remove furniture or art, change the materials and textures of rooms, or fiddle with the lighting.

Few people in the 1930s wanted to bring in quite as much color, or shades of colors, as Dorothy Draper. Not wanting to be restricted by a client's cautious taste, she began to pursue spaces that other private decorators weren't interested in, spaces that most people overlooked, spaces that would eventually make her famous: hotels and resorts.

Is yellow sour or sweet? Pantone, the company that sets the standard for color matching, has an answer. At the pop-up Pantone cafe in Monaco, you can grab a scoop of Vanilla 11-0104 ice cream or a Pistachio Green 19-1625 eclair, before washing your snack down with a glass of Vibrant Orange 16-364 juice. Every item sold by the cafe (as well as the restaurant’s napkins, tables, chairs and coffee makers) has a corresponding Pantone color code listed alongside the item.

Once you have taken photographs of your latest interior setup, you naturally want to show it off on your blog or send the photos to be published elsewhere. Before you decide to send them or post them online; take a closer look at the pictures you have taken. Are they representing your design in the best possible light? Are the colors in the pictures the right shade? Have you, in being a bit hasty, taken crooked photos?

At the foundation of any presentation is a fundamental goal that is often overlooked: the presentation should change the audience in some way. To do this, you should always try to influence the audience’s memories, and so you need to be aware of how information gets into memory in order to create presentations that will have high impact.

The proportion of our nation’s population over the age of 65 will experience considerable growth to double current levels. This trend will impact many types of specialty sectors and practices. Approaching this population’s needs with functional understanding and empathy opens up an expansive opportunity for designers to create responsive, integral designs that are intuitive to and supportive of their shifting physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional vulnerabilities and needs. Among these, geriatric considerations in the care environment include disorientation, mobility, and balance issues, medication complexities, and presence of comorbidities that create complex care needs. The growing population of people on the autistic spectrum, in both pediatric and adult facilities, is another diverse population up for consideration.
