Adhering to a familiar seasonal pattern, demand for interior design services softened somewhat in late summer, then picked up in the last two months. Designers are reporting an increase in projects and new inquiries, with an average project backlog of around five weeks. Growth is expected to taper off slightly, but remain positive, toward the end of the year. According to the latest Houzz Renovation Barometer, architectural and design services reported an uptick in business during the third quarter compared to the previous quarter.

Building Design + Construction
According to a new recently released survey from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), employees who work in LEED-certified green buildings are happier, healthier, and more productive than employees in conventional and non-LEED buildings. The survey also shows that a majority of office workers want to work for companies that are value-oriented, take stances on important issues like sustainability, and do their part for making a positive difference in the world. In fact, 84 percent of respondents prefer to work for a company that has a strong, concrete mission and positive values.

The term inclusive design has been around for decades, but it was largely an academic practice until recently. When I first learned about inclusive design, very few companies were applying it to their work in a repeatable way. At Microsoft, we sought out mentors from universities. Most importantly, Jutta Treviranus and her team at Ontario College of Art and Design.

What comes to mind when you encounter the term “sensory design?" Chances are it is an image: a rain room, a funky eating utensil, a conspicuously textured chair. But the way things actually feel, smell, even taste, is much harder to capture. This difficulty points to how deeply ingrained the tyranny of vision is. Might the other senses be the keys to unlocking broader empirical truths? Does the ocular-centric bias of art, architecture, and design actually preclude a deeper collective experience?

Just like America itself, American interior design is a melting pot of inspirations from other countries. The style we know as midcentury modern, for instance, originally was a spinoff of the modernist movement in Denmark. Our version of feng shui, of course, takes its inspiration from the ancient Chinese philosophy that governs spatial arrangement and orientation and how it relates to good energy.

As in fashion, styles in home decor are cyclical. Don’t expect to see a resurgence of avocado or harvest gold kitchen appliances anytime soon — or ever — but do expect brass hardware and fixtures to eclipse chrome. Note that today’s brass is unlacquered, not the shiny, polished material of days gone by. Homeowners have been taking a shine to metallics overall.

Some of the smartest gamesmanship is taking place off the field, as professional and collegiate sports organizations aim to expand the fan experience. Little Caesars Arena, a multipurpose venue shared by the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings and NBA’s Detroit Pistons, anchors The District Detroit, a 50-block mixed-use development in the heart of the city. The arena’s lower main concourse is positioned at street level, and many of its amenities extend to an outdoor concourse that generates year-round activity.

We’ve all been there—harsh lighting, outdated fitness magazines, uncomfortable chairs in windowless rooms—the truth is that dentist offices are often as ugly as they are fear-inducing. But every now and then, it’s possible to create medical offices that soothe rather than stress. To achieve this goal, some designers might focus on interesting wall detailing, access to daylight, or even innovative circulation.

Flexible design isn’t a new phenomenon. Nor is flexibility in healthcare environments. But the velocity and scope of technological changes, shifting consumer demographics, and value-placed health policy has sparked a renewed interest in the concept of a flexible, adaptable environment.

“Design for humanity!” That was the plea of moderator Susan S. Szenasy, director of design innovation at Metropolis, during a freewheeling hour-long panel discussion at HDR’s Boston offices in early August. But it is humanity in all its forms that concerns Szenasy, hence the title of the panel: “Designing Inclusive Environments: Independence Beyond Social Barriers.”

When audio agency Sonic Union’s squad of sound designers, engineers, creative producers, and composers grew out of their first “playground” in Union Square, New York, soundproof spaces with a loud identity were a must. Enter Revamp Interior Design, whose co-founders and principals Cece Stelljes and Danielle Fennoy loved the faceted, bright blue plywood cladding that RAW-NYC’s Raya Ani had planned for the 3,000-square-foot space just off Bryant Park.

Rockwell Group’s design for the recently opened Blue School in New York City falls outside the lines of traditional design for primary and secondary education, especially in the cramped Big Apple. While the school includes many basic elements such as closed-door classrooms and a sizable cafeteria, the one thing the architects were expected to uniquely incorporate for the private school, which was founded by alumni of the Blue Man Group, is color. Lots of color.

The word “mall” derives from a croquet-like game that was played in alleyways across 16th-century Italy. Later embraced as a street name in London for social clubs, it eventually came to be defined as “a long and open area where people can walk.” Today’s mall shows little semblance of its Italian Renaissance roots, yet a remarkable shift in societal values has left us less inclined than ever to go to a mall to buy stuff and equally reluctant to pass leisure time there.
