Client interest in new projects also rose. Housing starts in the U.S. also rose in September, surpassing economists’ estimates, the Commerce Department said yesterday. However, the ABI did not report an increase in residential projects. Healthcare and institutional projects also remained flat. More

Paint Quality Institute    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Individual style, mixed with budget-conscious decorating, will drive 2011 paint color trends, according to Debbie Zimmer, paint and color expert at the Paint Quality Institute. By incorporating a few new paint colors, either as accent walls or throughout a room, consumers will be able to enhance their living spaces economically with paint, she says. Zimmer identifies a return to neutral colors, "well-worn" blues and shimmering accents as the paint trends to watch going into 2011. More

Personal controls may reduce effectiveness of green buildings
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Post-occupancy analysis of two Canadian buildings (one green, one conventionally designed) found that while the availability and use of personal controls were higher in the green building, the quality of personal control in terms of responsiveness, the absence of immediate and relevant feedback, and poor user comprehension may have led to suboptimal indoor environmental conditions. The researchers conclude that "Feedback on the consequences of exerting environmental control should be directly observable, inherently legible, and deal explicitly with the inhabitants’ experience." Product placement dominates Kips Bay decors
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Kips Bay show house has always been a certain kind of marketing opportunity for designers. This is because its promotional benefits accrue vaguely to the design profession as a whole, rather than its individual practitioners. It is rare for design firms to gain clients from the endeavor, which is time- and labor-consuming, and expensive as well. But now that most decorators have products to sell—furniture, rug and wallpaper collections, books—they can move these objects into a show house room and hope for a more direct response from their audiences. Style, function power home entertainment furniture sales
Furniture Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Style and function are big selling points for home entertainment units at this week's High Point market. Television mounts, fireplace units in media pieces, mixed media units and large scale entertainment walls are popular here with retailers in the category. Many suppliers appear to have pulled back introductions in the category. Some continue to add new functions, but the innovation in the category looks to have tapered off just a bit, in favor of more focus on design or materials and construction. More
