Can designers stamp out rural poverty?
the Fast Company    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Plans for a national design center to help alleviate rural poverty will be solidified when 60 designers, corporate leaders, foundation heads, and journalists meet next month for the 2009 Aspen Design Summit. The event, sponsored by the AIGA and Winterhouse Institute, is a strategy session for the social design movement. The Aspen summit, which is backed by the Rockefeller Foundation, will also explore ways in which designers might help a UNICEF project to make classrooms safer and more conducive to learning and how designers might aid sustainable alternatives to the U.S. food industry. Not all designers embracing green
the Architect Magazine    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
According to a recent Gallup poll, only 58 percent of the general public is convinced that global warming is caused by man, which means that nearly half of us remain skeptical. As it turns out, some of those skeptics are design professionals. Architect magazine reports that in a survey it conducted in the summer, one third of the design professionals who responded said skepticism about climate change was "common" in their professional network, while nearly 13 percent answered that global warming was "a myth." 50+ housing sales slump approaching end of the road
Nation's Building News    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The year ahead looks increasingly positive for the active adult housing market, according to the NAHB's 50+ Housing Council. But joblessness and tighter credit conditions still linger as constraints on sales and construction activity, they said, and in the early stages of recovery prospective buyers will continue to be price-conscious and to demonstrate restraint. The recovery is likely to start out gradually, but within the next two years, as the first Boomers turn 65, they expect to see a significant rebound. More

Commercial Property Executive    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Over the past couple of years BIM has worked its way into most AEC professionals' vocabulary, but there hasn't been too much quantifiable data regarding its success or use. A new SmartMarket report from McGraw-Hill Construction evaluates the ROI users of BIM have seen, as well as several case studies that look at BIM in action. It found that half of the construction industry is using BIM. It also paints a very positive picture of the ROI potential of BIM. More
The graying of America: Age and opportunity
Commercial Property Executive    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The graying of America may arguably be one of the single most dramatic demographic megatrends shaping our landscape. Although the U.S. population growth for individuals age 55 and over during the past nine years hasn't been impressive—from 21.06 percent to 24.17 percent—growth for individuals age 55-64 increased by 30 percent over the same period. Given that the oldest Boomers turned 63 this year, maybe it's time investors consider the opportunities this megatrend offers. More

Water pumping plant renovated into gorgeous living space
Inhabitat    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Berlin is a burgeoning modern city with a compelling history, a diverse culture, abundant art, and distinctive architecture that rivals the likes of Paris, London and New York. But if there is one thing that can set the city apart from its pricey peers, it's the unbelievably inexpensive property. Not unlike many of the uber-creative expatriates that have taken up residence there, two enterprising artists, Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, decided it was time to purchase and renovate a place of their own. So what can $700,000 get you in a city like Berlin? An apartment? A loft? Maybe a small house? How about a massive water pumping station? More
