Reducing patient falls through residential and healthcare design
Healthcare Design Magazine
Share

More than one-third of adults over the age of 65 fall each year. Thousands die each year as a result of injuries sustained from falls. Around 10 percent of all
falls occur in a healthcare facility, and most falls in healthcare facilities occur when patients are trying to get to the bathroom. By allowing for larger patient rooms that accommodate family members who are able to assist the patient, the number of falls reduces.

MESSAGE FROM ASID
Caution: E-mail Scams on the Rise
Please be very cautious of email communications inquiring about specific design services and requesting detailed payment options and/or instructions. Several ASID members have received such emails. Subsequent communications often contain a lot of convincing detail; ask that you charge their credit card, make a payment and retain a portion as a deposit for your work. Don't fall prey to this attempt to defraud you.

you have experienced any suspicious email correspondence, please contact the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at www.ic3.gov or (877) 382-4357.

Small details matter in designing patient rooms
Contract
Share

Patient room design details matter more than you might think. Small decisions on things like paper towels, soiled linen and hand sanitizer are often delegated to purchasing departments. They are treated
as equipment for budgeting and planning and are not part of the interior designer’s scope of work. This leads to a break down in the overall design intent and can cause operational inefficiencies and increased maintenance costs.

Industrial designer Bob Schwartz, general manager of global design for GE Healthcare, is seeing some significant changes occurring across the health-care
sector, in terms of product development. He and his team now think about "the total sensory experience" that occurs when one interacts with a product. The mission is to exploit such characteristics, in combination with the product's design, to provide patients with "a less-anxious journey through the medical system."

Very little about the American classroom has changed since Laura Ingalls sat in one more than a century ago. The e-zine Slate wants to change that. They have launched a crowdsourcing project on the 21st-century classroom, seeking to collect readers’ best ideas for transforming the American school. Describe or even design the classroom for today, a fifth-grade classroom that takes advantage of all
