Good Biophilic Design: More Than Just a Couple of Plants
Sourceable
The biophilia hypothesis argues there is an instinctive and interconnected relationship between humans and the natural world, and that this relationship is essential for us to sustain our health and well-being. This instinctive response to nature is reinforced with compelling research that finds biophilic design can lower blood pressure and heart rate, minimize the production of stress hormones, positively affect circadian rhythms and elevate mood.

Spooky Stats: The Trulia Housing Scare Report
Trulia
In honor of All Hallows' Eve, Trulia conducted a survey of prospective homebuyers to find out what creeps them out as they look for their dream house. Turns out, most house hunters are more afraid of clutter or living near a highway than they are of going to sleep at night in a former crime scene. And they're just as horrified by bad wallpaper (12 percent) as they are by living at a hellish address that includes "666" (just a devilish 13 percent).

How Do These Curtains Make You Feel? The Science of Therapists' Offices
Fast Company's Co.Design
Photographer Saul Robbins' "Initial Intake" project tries to capture the feel of Manhattan-based therapist offices from the patient's point of view. In addition to its artistic purpose, the series has served a scientific one. For a few years now, environmental design researchers Jack Nasar of Ohio State and Ann Sloan Devlin of Connecticut College have used the photos to evaluate the impressions various office interiors convey and to determine which characteristics are shared by the best and the worst.

What Are You Selling, Design or Discounts?
Design Management Company
Not only do today's clients want to take on more of the project, but they also tend to balk at what they perceive to be pricey designer fees. To compensate, some designers are attempting to entice clients with designer discounts on purchases. While that might land a client or two, it sends the wrong message about your role and devalues your worth even further.

Inside Ultra-Luxury Kitchens: Trends Among Wealthy Buyers Who Rarely Cook
Forbes
On the luxury market, a kitchen fully loaded with the latest and greatest appliances and gadgets is a strong selling point — even for wealthy buyers who rarely cook but turn their kitchens over to a hired chef or caterer. Perhaps this helps explain the rising popularity of the butler's pantry, sometimes called a scullery, or secondary kitchen.

Is Green Retail Design Sustainable?
VMSD
While the industry is hardly abandoning the green movement, it seems fatigued by it. Retailers know LEED accreditation is a time consuming and expensive process — and green's payback, for retail, is questionable for brick-and-mortar projects that typically have a short lifespan compared to other commercial endeavors. Interest in other time- and resource-consuming issues (mobile retail, data breaches) is pushing green to the back burner.

Is It Time for the Anti-LEED?
Arch Daily
The LEED rating systems were a great idea in the beginning, but they have become a symbol of all that is wrong with green building today. Getting a LEED rating is slow, difficult and expensive, and the rating is skewed heavily to Gizmo Green solutions that are completely ignorant of where the building is being built, and for whom. We need the opposite sort of system today: one that is intelligent about where a building is built and who it's being built for, and that is fast, friendly and free, so that anyone can use it.

Think Open Plan Offices Are the Most Productive? Think Again
Officing Today
According to a poll of 1,015 U.K. office workers, when asked in which environment staff consider themselves most productive, open-plan offices appeared at the bottom of the list with just 3 percent of votes. That said, closed or individual spaces aren't conducive to productivity either. Just 6 percent of respondents voted for private spaces. The perfect space is not necessarily open, or closed, or collaborative, or creative — but one that suits the unique personality of the person using it.
