An Inside Look at Generation Y
K+BB
Members of Generation Y — or millennials, as they are often called — are shaping the future of design and upcoming trends. Millennials make up about 24 percent of the U.S. population. They also represent a generation in flux: While some are in college or recently graduated and are living with their parents, others are already married professionals caught in the work/family crunch. No matter what stage of life they're in, the reality is they represent between $1 and $1.7 trillion in annual spending power, and that number will only increase as their youngest members mature.

New ASID Tool Aims to Break Through the Sustainability Clutter
Healthcare Design
LEED, Cradle to Cradle, EPDs and HPDs. The list of sustainability initiatives, design tools, and rating systems — as well as acronyms — continues to grow. While all of these initiatives are aimed at elevating design and establishing a correlation between indoor, environmental and human health, the growing complexity can leave some designers, architects and owners struggling with what they stand for and how they all relate. ASID presented its answer this fall, announcing a commitment with the Clinton Global Initiative America and 11 partner organizations to develop the ASID Protocols for Health and Wellness in Design.

Bracing for the Falls of an Aging Nation
The New York Times
As the population ages and people live longer in bad shape, the number of older Americans who fall and suffer serious, even fatal, injuries is soaring. So the retirement communities, assisted living facilities and nursing homes where millions of Americans live are trying to balance safety and their residents' desire to live as they choose. Trying to anticipate hazardous conditions, retirement facilities hire architects and interior designers, some of whom wear special glasses that show the building as an old person would see it.

Home or Work? Designers Say the Difference Is Decreasing
Interior Design
At a recent roundtable discussion of about 30 Chicago designers and architects, the talk turned not to fees or millennials but to office culture and life-work balance. The lively group spent most of its time discussing how office design was being driven by the merging of life-work time, with the two increasingly having little to no separation in today's daily life.
