Interior design billings weak in quarter
American Society of Interior Designers    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Results of the ASID Interior Design Business Performance survey for the third quarter of 2011 signaled business conditions for the interior design industry were similar to the broader U.S. economy: sub-par economic growth. The ASID Interior Design Billings Index fell to its lowest point in July (45.1), then recovered in August (48.6) and increased slightly in September (48.2). But it has yet to re-enter positive territory (above 50.0). On a positive note, the Inquiries Index was up nearly 10 points over August (55.1 vs. 45.8) indicating a possible uptick in the fourth quarter, possibly seasonal. More

Frontiers of design science: Biophilia
Metropolis    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Research into an area known as biophilia shows that when the characteristics of natural environments are present, human beings tend to feel calmer, more at ease, more comfortable, less stressed — and, most astounding, their health actually can improve. Aesthetic design choices are not just a matter of the designer's artistic expression, for users to enjoy or not enjoy — together with other factors, they can improve, or damage, the health of users. Contemplating Modernism's contribution to the kitchen
The Guardian    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Kitchen design is a fiendish business, for the simple reason that it is expected to solve a paradox: Somehow, the tangle of wires and water pipes, the arsenal of appliances and mountains of cookware and cornflakes have to be stowed away to create the illusion of wide-open space. Along with this trickery, we also demand two other qualities. First, the kitchen must be hygienic, preferably as aseptic as an operating theater. Second, it must be crammed with devices that make any kind of manual labor unnecessary. For these three kitchen commandments we have the modernists to thank. More
