Multigenerational, accessible homes gain favor with buyers
USA Today Share
A slower housing market is shifting consumer preferences toward multigenerational homes, sustainable and cool (solar reflective) roofs, and single-floor living that is easier for an aging population, according to AIA's Home Design Trends survey for the third quarter of 2010. Overall, the residential architects who participated in the survey say business remains very weak, although remodeling projects—especially in
kitchens and baths—has picked up from the same period a year ago. More

MESSAGE FROM ASID
Healthcare Designers - Share Your Views on Evidence-Based Design
You are invited to participate in a short online survey about evidence-based design. Its purpose is to gather healthcare interior designers' perceptions of evidence-based design and how designers currently use it (or not) in their practice.
It's not
necessary that you currently use evidence-based design to participate. The survey takes no more than 10 minutes to complete. As a thank you gift you will be invited to download a free quick reference sheet about evidence-based design. This survey will be available online for two weeks. You may also elect to have the study's results sent to you. This study is the master's thesis of Emily Phares, Department of Interior Design at Florida State University.
To complete the survey, click on

Rug-focused
design projects increase with collector demand
Businesswire
Share

Highlighted by a record-price for an Oriental carpet sold at auction and the remarkable interest in rug-based interior design projects, the year 2010 has pushed the level of interest and excitement in art-level Oriental rugs to unprecedented heights. Affluent clients are asking designers to design interior spaces or entire residences around rare, one-in-the-world rugs. One dealer/designer reports the number of clients who acquired
rugs exclusively for their private rug vaults or cellars more than doubled during the year, and he expects demand will continue to increase in the coming year.

Restaurant consumers rely on familiarity as measure of quality
Research Design Connections
Share

A study published in the Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services finds that there are significant reasons to design a restaurant so that it looks like other restaurants of the same type. The researchers found that consumers often rely on typicality (what they are familiar with) as a measure of quality, rather than on the perceived quality of the actual environment. They suggest that "After carefully addressing typicality cues
which are instrumental in stressing points of parity, brand managers can use quality cues to show the product's point of difference in a category."

Animated video displays the wonders of the Fibonacci series
Metropolis Magazine
Share

Named for a thirteenth century Italian merchant who publicized it, the Fibonacci series was long considered bread-and-butter mathematics for designers and
architects. The ratio of the higher numbers in the series comes closer and closer to the Golden proportion—that divine formula that some say underlies the architecture of the Parthenon. Spanish animator Cristóbal Vila has created a video that reveals the "divine plan" of the Fibonacci series in nature.

Science and observation combine to create 'happy kitchens'
The Wall Street Journal
Share

Award-winning designer Johnny Grey specializes in what he calls "happy kitchens." Bringing emotional, physical and psychological well-being into kitchen planning, Grey and his team typically spend 80 hours or more observing clients in their kitchens at various times of the day and week to better understand what makes them tick. He believes combining design with psychology and neuroscience produces a more satisfactory result than an
off-the-shelf fitted kitchen.

Children's perspectives aid in atrium

Children's perceptions and opinions are often times excluded in programming and social science research related to health care environments. A Canadian research
team surveyed children and adolescents who were patients in a hospital for children to assess how their perceptions of the environment matched with the intentions of the architectural firm that designed it. While the patients' responses were in large part favorable, the researchers concluded that children often are able to effectively convey their perceptions of spaces and should be consulted when planning environments for their use.

Mom caves are latest interior design trend
Gloucester County Times
Share

Just after the millennium, a new decorating phenomenon reared its masculine head above the normally feminine practice of designing the family home.
Suddenly,
the special, male-only spaces which were historically known as "garages" took on a more prominent role in the household. The basement, a spare bedroom or den began to take on a much more macho look with sports themes, giant televisions and video game entertainment centers. These rooms became commonly known as "the man cave." However, recently the women of the house have started to catch on to the idea of having a secluded and quiet space of their own, prompting the birth of the "mom
cave."
