Healthcare design's new paradigm shift
Healthcare Design Magazine    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The traditional design/build model resembles a baseball team; you've got some star pitchers and hitters, and other assorted defensive team players who stand around waiting to react to a hit that comes in their direction. The new integrated model is more like football; it is an environment of "all for one and one for all," where everyone has a job to do and contributes equally to the team's success. More

Interior design trends of 2011: 'emotional austerity,' 're-balancing'
The Independent    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

The predictions are drawn from the book Interior Trends 2011 recently released by IMM Cologne. More

Sustainable design as design
DesignIntelligence    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As collaborative problem solvers, designers are uniquely positioned to be the catalyst that prompts the public and private sectors to embrace the sustainability challenge. But we must adapt our traditional models to improve the way buildings are designed, constructed, and operated. At a moment in time when industry, business, and creative arts are embracing design thinking as the inspiration for their own change, how do we fundamentally change our thinking to embrace and assimilate sustainable design as design? Design strategies to combat office stress
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A study to be published in the journal Environment and Behavior finds that as the level of cumulative risk exposures escalates, adverse health and behavioral outcomes emerge. For that reason, addressing work environment characteristics in isolation may underestimate the true worker burden of poorly designed and managed work settings. The authors caution that "design or management interventions that zero in on singular work factors as suspected causal agents [compromising health or well-being] are unlikely to yield desired outcomes because they fail to address the complex and dynamic multivariate nature of the ecology of work." What to know about the changing ADA
Hospitality Design    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In July 2010, President Obama announced the most significant changes to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) since it became law in 1991. While the new requirements are more evolutionary than revolutionary, the new design and construction requirements will affect most commercial real estate in at least some fashion when they take effect in March 15, 2012. Among those most affected will be hotels and retail establishments. More

Electrified TRON Ice Hotel suite opens in Sweden
Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With the much anticipated 3D TRON: Legacy coming out in theaters, a set of British designers are celebrating the Disney movie with a suite at the famous IceHotel above the Arctic Circle in Sweden. An electric blue Tron-inspired lighting scheme is achieved by cutting grooves into the ice, inserting energy efficient EL wire and then icing over the wire to keep it in place. The project is being used to launch a new line of illuminated furniture and interiors products due out early 2011. More

As patients age, medical offices need to be senior friendly
Medical Office Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Medical practitioners don't have to be geriatricians to find a number of senior patients in their waiting rooms. Yet many are not thinking about the special needs of this segment of the population. Doing what they can to make seniors feel welcome and cared for in their office not only keeps these patients coming back, but it can protect them from injury and the practice from avoidable legal problems. Mixed use retail space combines jewelry store and restaurant
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Beauty & Essex, which opened last weekend in Manhattan, is part jewelry and antique shop and part restaurant—with a decidedly Lower East Side sensibility. The entrance is a small shop that sells vintage jewelry, guitars and books. Beyond the rear door is the Beauty part—the restaurant, which has a 17-foot-tall chandelier suspended over a spiral staircase and walls covered in white horsehair. More
