Custom Home Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A recent survey by the American Society of Landscape Architects pinpointed the residential outdoor living and landscaping design elements that are developing in 2011. Homeowners' landscape design and outdoor living plans are still scaled down somewhat because of economic concerns, but they're not eliminating the elements that make outdoor spaces comfortable, attractive and usable. In its March issue, Architectural Record magazine profiles best new libraries from around the globe. It also reflects on the role of libraries and library design in a world where books, old and new, are available anytime, anywhere in electronic form. B7. Selling clients on the value of design
Design Biz Blueprint    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For many years designers have relied on product mark-ups to be fairly paid for their creative ability and organizational services. An unintended consequence is that the client has come to believe that the "magic" of interior design is in the product that they buy, rather than in the experience of co-creating their uniquely individual space with a talented designer. Now that product has become available to anyone who is willing to diligently search the Internet, designers are having trouble getting paid what they are worth. Here are six talking points that you can use when selling your design services to your clients. More

Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Why have you been so successful in reaching some of your goals, but not others? If you aren't sure, you are far from alone in your confusion. The intuitive answer — that you are born predisposed to certain talents and lacking in others — really is just one small piece of the puzzle. In fact, decades of research on achievement suggests that successful people reach their goals not simply because of who they are, but more often because of what they do. More
