1. Color forecasts for 2012
Custom Home Online    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Fashion usually foretells, a year or so in advance, what shades eventually will permeate home trends. The Color Marketing Group announced this spring that p'zazz, a vibrant, deep red-purple, seen in past seasons on the runway, is the "it" color for fall/winter 2011 to 2012. According to CMG's forecast, "expect [p'zazz] to adorn feature walls, accent soft furnishings and breathe new life into standard hues such as beige, navy and gray." More

2. Floor trends of the future
The Independent    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Two hot topics or key trends in the world of flooring are "sustainability in flooring" and "fashion meets carpet." The organizers of Domotex 2011 predict that in 2011/2012 carpets will double as design items and play a more pronounced role in interior decoration considerations. Carpets are beginning to incorporate modern and edgy colors, 3D looks and unique materials, and classic styles of carpet are getting an updated, more modern look. More

3. How 'foodies' approach kitchen design
Residential Design + Build    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The expanding cultural trend toward healthy eating, exercising and overall well-being is changing how people are thinking about where and how they prepare their food. Clients are taking their time to make decisions around kitchen remodels. They are more curious about products and processes, more careful in assessing their routines and more discerning with their wallets for value-laden projects. The food lover requires different appliances, storage and design than the average homeowner. More

4. European trends heat up American kitchens
Custom Home Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Painted and exotic wood cabinets, appliances boasting wireless connectivity and hands-free faucets are some of the hot trends from overseas. Not all European innovations are finding favor here. Cabinets, prep islands and other units that can be raised and lowered have not yet caught on with U.S. consumers, nor have refrigerators with drawers but no shelves. More

5. Romancing the home
The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The latest trend in interior design has been a while in coming. First came the slow disappearance of orchids and taupe from our living rooms. Next a revival in color and pattern. Then a nostalgia for things from the past, largely fueled by the recession, which led to the rethinking and reworking of what we already had. Add to that a burgeoning green movement and a renewed interest in craftsmanship, and you have what is loosely being called the "New Romanticism"—a return to good old-fashioned British design. More

6. RICKI study probes kitchen tastes of Gen Y consumers
Kitchen & Bath Design News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As the baby boom generation did before them, Generation Y is sparking major changes in the marketplace, from design aesthetics to delivery channels — including a different concept of "kitchens" than their older baby boom counterparts. That's one of several key findings of a major new study conducted by the Research Institute for Cooking & Kitchen Intelligence. More

7. Consumers' home priorities shifting
Custom Home Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Now that the economy seems less dire, consumers are beginning to let themselves think ahead to better days, including somewhat bigger homes, according to the Better Homes and Gardens 2011 Consumer Preferences Survey. Home affordability and energy efficiency still are top of mind, the survey found. While consumers are feeling more optimistic about the economy and are starting to plan home improvements or their next home purchase, they are still operating on a value mentality. That is, they still want to get the most bang for their buck and they remain cautious about spending. More

8. Making the modern house a home
Design Observer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
On May 10, the J. Irwin and Xenia Miller House in Columbus, Ind., opens to the public for the first time since it was completed in 1958. Designed by Eero Saarinen and Kevin Roche, with interiors by Alexander Girard and gardens by Daniel Urban Kiley, the Miller house has been largely out of sight of the design world since its single publication in House & Garden in 1959. The Miller house now can be seen as a link in the chain of glass houses that announced the arrival of modernism in America and remain the icons of their respective architects' work. Although photographs can make it look as chilly as a vault, the Miller children remember the home as a welcoming and comfortable space, thanks in large part to Girard's colorful and whimsical interiors. 9. And the Oscar goes to . . . the AD Greenroom
Architectural Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Where will the stars be before they hit the stage at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards® on Feb. 27? The Architectural Digest Greenroom, of course. Each year, AD selects a noted designer to transform a raw space into a backstage oasis for presenters and winners alike on Hollywood's biggest night. More

10. Is your kitchen making you fat?
Daily Mail    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nutritionists warn the modern kitchen actually is making us fatter. Among the culprits are supersize refrigerators, walk-in pantries, kitchen islands and open display shelves. Each puts food — and more food — within sight and easy reach, tempting us to eat more than we should. Even lighting and the color on the walls can trigger behaviors that lead to overeating. B1. A better way to set fees
Design Biz Blueprint    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There are two big mistakes that many designers make when it comes to understanding how to price and sell their time. One is, they think that if they knew what other designers were charging, they would charge the same. The second is, they try to sell their time by the hour. A better way is to determine in your own mind what you are worth, and then charge a fee for a specific scope of work. More

B2. A la carte model targets design services to younger demographic
Clarendon-Courthouse-Rosslyn Patch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A la carte interior design — in which designers offer their services in package deals — has become a new affordable way for homeowners to decorate in high style. As clients scaled back their requests and budgets, some designers began offering these packages through the Internet. Now young designers are creating a niche by providing these packages in person. The aim is to take the anxiety out of great interior design, especially for younger urban dwellers who have not used a designer before. More

Some of the trends in online design services include complete home packages and a la carte services such as finding the perfect home accessories for a room. Online design services are fantastic way to grow your interior design business while not being limited by geography. More
