AUTM 2015 Annual Meeting: Accommodations Deadline Jan. 22

The AUTM 2015 Annual Meeting will be held Feb. 22-25 at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans. A discounted room rate of $249 per night for a single or double occupancy has been negotiated by AUTM. Be sure to make your room reservations by the Jan. 22 deadline, as afterwards the discounted room rates may not apply.

How the Virginia Serious Game Institute Has Generated New Businesses at George Mason

The Virginia Serious Game Institute on George Mason University's Prince William campus is not even a year old, and already it has made a significant difference on school grounds. Led by George Mason faculty, the institute birthed five businesses and more than 35 new jobs in 2014. In the coming months it expects to support the launch of four more businesses and create 30 more jobs. What's more, VSGI has raised half a million dollars in corporate support, according to the university.

Florida Institute Funds Gainesville-based Comm-N-Sense

The Florida Institute for Commercialization of Public Research has announced that it has finalized a funding agreement with Comm-N-Sense, a company that provides monitoring and tracking solutions to improve operations for businesses that rely on perishable supply chains. The Institute supports new company creation based on publicly-funded research and bridges early funding gaps for companies spinning out of Florida-based universities and research institutions.

Texas Institute for Preclinical Studies Established at Texas A&M
Texas A&M University
The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents established the new Texas Institute for Preclinical Studies (TIPS) on the campus of Texas A&M University. The institute will be an organizational unit of the university, reporting to the vice president for research. "TIPS will help set the stage for Texas to expand its leadership role in biotech innovation," said Regents Chairman John D. White.

Sometimes the grass really is greener on the other side. Just ask Bill Carraway, vice president of marketing at The Turfgrass Group, which markets and licenses TifGrand, a shade- and wear-tolerant cultivar developed by researchers at the University of Georgia.

"Having a Bermudagrass that can tolerate shade is something those of us in the turf business have wanted our whole lives," he said. "A Bermudagrass that can tolerate shade is a phenomenon."
