SUNY Chiefs, Profs to Get Biz Creation Bonuses Under New York
Governor's Plan

Under a plan being floated by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, SUNY presidents and entrepreneurial professors would be paid bonuses for business development on their campuses. The proposal is part of Cuomo's budget. Under a section called "Enhance the Start-Up NY Program," Cuomo calls for "financial incentives" for SUNY and CUNY presidents who "provide proven leadership resulting in commercialization of research."

How University of Hawaii Licensing Revenue Stacks Up Nationally

For some universities, even some the size of University of Hawaii, licensing revenue generates anywhere from millions of dollars to more than $100 million a year. By comparison, nine University of Hawaii patents were issued last year, generating royalty revenue of about $145,000.

A 10-minute business pitch will be the deciding factor when 14 University at Buffalo student entrepreneurs compete for up to $8,000 in seed funding. UB's Entrepreneurship Lab, or eLab, has returned for its second year. The three-week winter-session class ditches homework and tests for a hands-on experience, providing undergraduate and graduate students with a crash course on developing a business plan, pitching to investors and engaging potential customers and partners.

    AUTM Appoints New Executive Director
    AUTM
    The AUTM Board of Directors announced the appointment of Stephen J. Susalka, Ph.D., CLP, as new AUTM Executive Director effective Jan. 23. Steve will work with the Board to implement AUTM's strategic plan and provide oversight of AUTM's contract with Kellen Company (formerly The Sherwood Group, Inc.) — the management company responsible for many of the association’s daily operations.

    Steve brings more than a decade of experience in technology transfer to the executive director's role. He is a registered U.S. Patent Agent and has worked as an Associate Director for Commercialization at Wake Forest Innovations and a Licensing Associate at the University of Virginia Patent Foundation (UVAPF). Steve has also served in a number of leadership positions within AUTM, including most recently Vice President for Meeting Development.

    Steve earned his doctorate in Neuroscience from the University of Virginia. He majored in Biology and Psychology at the College of William & Mary where he earned a Bachelor of Science.

    Please congratulate Steve when you see him next month at the AUTM Annual Meeting and welcome him in his new leadership role.

    The AUTM Board is grateful to the independent search committee for their hard work in identifying and reviewing a number of very qualified candidates for the position.
