Louisville Gets Another Boost to Commercialize Research

The University of Louisville's entrepreneurial ecosystem just got a boost in funding and status. The university has received a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to commercialize research. The three-year grant names the university as an Innovation Corps Site, known as I-Corps, a designation only 35 other universities hold.

University of Hawaii's PACE Nears its $2.5 Million Goal, Shoots for
$1 Million More

The University of Hawaii's Pacific and Asian Center for Entrepreneurship is growing in all directions. The center at the university's Manoa campus is just $300,000 away from its capital campaign goal of $2.5 million, but an additional $1 million is needed to endow the executive director position, taking the total goal to $3.5 million. The center, which supports commercialization of UH technology and research, is growing by more than three times its size at the UH Shidler College of Business. It will increase from 800 to 2,500 square feet, adding student co-working space, as well as offices and meeting areas.

Collaboration Brings Orphan Drug to Big Pharma

Throwing his whole "heart and science" into sickle cell disease (SCD), Donald Abraham, a Virginia Commonwealth University researcher, may have beat the odds and discovered a treatment for this rare, but debilitating disease. The therapeutic, called Aes-103, started a Phase II trial in 2013. In addition to bringing hope to the 100,000 Americans who suffer from SCD, the treatment's success also included unique business model that could be used for other orphan diseases.
