A patent is a proprietary right granted by the Federal government to an inventor. There are three types of patents available in the United States: a utility patent, which covers the functional aspects of products and processes; a design patent, which covers the ornamental design of useful objects; and a plant patent, which covers a new variety of living plant. Each type of patent confers "the right to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale or selling" the invention in the United States or "importing" the invention into the United States. Sanuthera, an Ohio University startup, is developing a medical device it hopes will represent a breakthrough in treating patients suffering from tinnitus, a ringing or buzzing in the ears. The device involves wireless ear buds connected to an MP3 player that can be customized to a patient's preference to play a number of sounds aimed at masking the ringing in the patient's ears. More

Self-sintering nanoink developed in Israel

A research group at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Isreal has developed technology for a nanoink that self-sinters at room temperature. The research demonstrated that the nanoink could be deposited and provide conductive properties without requiring a post-sintering process step. Instead, the properties of the nanomaterial are used to make the ink aggregate and self-sinter. More

D-Wave researchers demonstrate progress in quantum computing

Biochar is more effective, cheaper at removing phosphate from water

Phosphate poses one of Florida's ongoing water-quality challenges. A process developed by University of Florida researchers using partially burned organic matter called biochar could provide an affordable solution. The process also yields methane gas usable as fuel and phosphate-laden carbon suitable for enriching soil. The University of Florida has filed a patent application for the phosphate-removal process and wastewater treatment facility representatives have shown interest in the technology. More
