University of Minnesota to Invest in Startup Companies

In order to get research and patents into the hands of companies, the University of Minnesota's Faculty Senate recently voted to update the school's policy on the commercialization of technology to allow the university to invest directly in startup companies. The amendment, which still needs approval from the Board of Regents to take effect, would allow the university to invest over $1 million in outside companies that want to license university-developed technology — allowing the school to become a shareholder in new companies.

University of Iowa Teams Up With NSF to Turn Inventions Into Businesses
University of Iowa
The University of Iowa has teamed up with the National Science Foundation to establish a program for accelerating the commercialization of technologies developed by student and faculty inventors and entrepreneurs. The program, called I-Corps, also includes an initiative to increase the number of woman entrepreneurs in particular.

Study: Michigan Research Universities Compare Well on Innovation, Lag In Commercializing Technology

Michigan's big three research universities again compare favorably overall to their national peers in terms of innovation, although more progress needs to occur in getting those ideas from the lab to the marketplace. The University Research Corridor — consisting of Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University — ranks seventh among eight research clusters in the number of startup companies cultivated from 2009 to 2013, seventh in technology transfer, sixth in patents granted and fifth in intellectual property licenses, according to an annual analysis.
