Texas UAS Test Site Provides Flood Assistance for State
UAS Magazine
Following heavy flooding that destroyed more than 400 homes and caused four deaths in Wimberley, Texas, a Texas-based unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research site has been dispatched to conduct low-altitude research flights. The Lone Star UAS Center of Excellence & Innovation at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will conduct the flights.

Crowdfunding Could Speed Cancer Diagnostic

Serial entrepreneur Michael J. Cumbo launched his first crowdfunding campaign in May to accelerate development of new technology his company, Eta Diagnostics Inc., is building to rapidly detect cancer cells in blood. The company, which launched in 2013 and closed on a $300,000 seed round of funding last December, is commercializing new technology from the University of New Mexico to immensely speed the analysis of tissue samples in cytometers, or cell meters, which are commonly used for medical diagnostics in laboratories and clinics.

Collaboration Brings Orphan Drug to Big Pharma
AUTM
Throwing his whole "heart and science" into sickle cell disease (SCD), Donald Abraham, a Virginia Commonwealth University researcher, may have beat the odds and discovered a treatment for this rare-but-debilitating condition. The therapeutic, called Aes-103, started a Phase II trial in 2013. In addition to bringing hope to the 100,000 Americans who suffer from SCD, the treatment’s success also included unique business model that could be used for other orphan diseases.
