Exclusive Interview with AUTM President Jane Muir

UCLA Inventions Show Range of Innovation at UC Forum

The focus for UCLA professors and grad students is on finding better solutions for thermal connectors used for retaining and extracting heat from rack-mounted printed circuit boards. They have invented an innovative wedgelock conduction heat transfer design that will benefit the high-tech industry by offering 20 percent better thermal performance than existing connectors and being less costly to produce.

UCSF Program Pushes Innovation in Medical Devices

At UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital, as in all hospitals, patients who lie in bed for hours sometimes develop painful skin sores. To prevent these wounds, nurses must check and move patients every few hours. But Dr. Hanmin Lee wonders if a device would do a better job of predicting and alerting staff to nascent bedsores. UCSF is opening the Rosenman Institute, a program intended to give Lee and other faculty members the resources to turn their ideas for medical devices into real products.

AUTM Seeks Fundraising Professional

AUTM is seeking letters of interest from fundraising professionals to assist with its strategies to increase nondues revenues. The funding environment currently offers more opportunities to secure grant funding — especially from government sources — than ever before. This environment may change at the conclusion of the Obama administration, so there is a certain level of urgency to begin activities. Activities will be focused on securing grants from government and foundations and expanding corporate engagement, cultivation and sponsorship.

Letters must be submitted via email in PDF format by July 31.

New Fuel Cell Could Eliminate Waste at Biodiesel Plants

A new fuel-cell concept, developed by a Michigan State University researcher, will allow biodiesel plants to eliminate the creation of hazardous wastes while removing their dependence on fossil fuel from their production process. The platform, which uses microbes to glean ethanol from glycerol and has the added benefit of cleaning up the wastewater, will allow producers to reincorporate the ethanol and the water into the fuel-making process.
