The National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association have announced the Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents in 2013. The list, based on data obtained from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, recognizes the important role patents play in university research.

North Carolina A&T Signs Deal to Commercialize Reduced-Allergy Peanut

A peanut that might not trigger allergic reactions is one step closer to store shelves. North Carolina A&T has announced that it has signed a licensing deal with a Canadian firm. The company, Xemerge, will look for commercial applications for a hypoallergenic peanut developed by A&T researchers.

Rival Schools Partner to Bring Oral Cancer-Fighting Patch to Patients

The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan have signed an exclusive worldwide agreement with Ohio–based Venture Therapeutics, Inc., to form a new company to develop and commercialize a pharmaceutical technology targeted for the treatment of precancerous oral lesions. These lesions are currently managed by invasive surgery and approximately a third of these lesions will reoccur after surgery.

Startup Led by UHM Graduate Student Places in National Competition
University of Hawaii at Manoa
A University of Hawaii startup company that designed a unique medical training device has won third place in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers 2014 Innovation Showcase. SmarTummy, led by University of Hawaii at Manoa graduate student Larry Martin, has developed a tool to train medical, nursing and osteopathic students in conducting an abdominal palpation exam.
