UTEP, Texas Tech Grants Aim at Propelling Faculty Research to Market
El Paso Times
Inventions from a low-cost prosthetic foot to a flexible 3-D printed rubber blend may get in consumers' hands faster with the help of grants from two local universities. The University of Texas at El Paso and the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center El Paso awarded eight grants of up to $50,000 each to faculty from both universities who are developing technologies that show potential for commercial success.

Avocados Could Help Treat Leukemia

Research from the University of Waterloo reveals that avocados could be effective in treating a form of cancer. Professor Paul Spagnuolo from the University of Waterloo has discovered a lipid in avocados that combats acute myeloid leukemia by targeting the root of the disease — leukemia stem cells. Currently there are few drug treatments available to patients that target leukemia stem cells.

Collaboration Brings Orphan Drug to Big Pharma
AUTM
Throwing his whole "heart and science" into sickle cell disease (SCD), Donald Abraham, a Virginia Commonwealth University researcher, may have beat the odds and discovered a treatment for this rare-but-debilitating condition. The therapeutic, called Aes-103, started a Phase II trial in 2013. In addition to bringing hope to the 100,000 Americans who suffer from SCD, the treatment’s success also included unique business model that could be used for other orphan diseases.
