Ohio State Alumnus Donates $1 Million to Fisher College of Business

Timothy Keenan, a businessman and an OSU alumnus, is giving the Ohio State entrepreneurship program a push. Keenan is giving $1 million to the OSU Fisher College of Business to support technology entrepreneurship and commercialization education for undergraduates. There are about 17 Division I universities that offer a degree in entrepreneurship, and "very few went to the extent that Fisher did to approve its minor," Keenan said in an interview with The Lantern.

Jackson-based Company to Use MSU Technology in Biocrude Production Facility

Mississippi State University has granted a commercialization license to a Jackson-based company for a technology developed and owned by the university. The technology extracts oil from microorganisms. Bio Energy Spectrum Solutions, LLC, received the exclusive right to commercialize MSU's patented technology involving extracting biocrude from oleaginous microorganisms, which are found in wastewater treatment facilities. The microorganisms accumulate oil similar to vegetable oil or animal fat.

Nonprofit Nears Liftoff to Commercialize NASA Glenn Technology

Alphaport executives eventually plan to form a for-profit business that would create spinoff companies to license those technologies from NASA and bring them to market. Ryan Loftus is the first student going through the process. As he heads into his junior year at the University of Akron, he's working with Bruce Banks, who works at NASA Glenn on a contract basis, to conduct research on atomic oxygen — and to figure out how to create a product based on the highly corrosive element.

Legislature OKs Bill to Aid University Spin-off Ventures

A bill that would join forces between Oregon State University and the University of Oregon — and the cities around them — to help create private companies based on research at the two universities has passed the Oregon Legislature. SB 241, which creates a new South Willamette Valley Regional Accelerator and Innovation Network and approves funding in the amount of $3.75 million, is expected to be signed by Gov. John Kitzhaber.
