Copyright Policy, Creativity and Innovation in the Digital Economy

The U.S. Department of Commerce released a green paper on copyright policy, creativity, and innovation in the digital economy to advance discussion on a set of policy issues critical to economic growth. The Green Paper discusses the goals of maintaining an appropriate balance between rights and exceptions as the law continues to be updated; ensuring that copyright can be meaningfully enforced on the Internet; and furthering the development of an efficient online marketplace.

Technology Industry Taking Aim at Patent Trolls

The tech industry, after focusing laserlike on immigration reform for much of the past year, is using the slow congressional walk on that issue to increasingly turn its attention to another fight: getting Washington to curb patent trolls. Silicon Valley has long complained about abusive patent litigation, calling it extortion and an unseen tax on its businesses. But now, with other sectors from retailers to realtors crying foul about the problem, the tech industry sees an opportunity to spur Washington into action.

Triad Universities Shine Light on New Solar Technology Research

Purdue Innovations Receive Over $200K From Commercialization Fund

Purdue University researchers received over $200,000 through the Trask Innovation Fund to commercialize their innovations. The Purdue Research Foundation-managed Trask Innovation Fund assists faculty and staff whose discoveries are commercialized through the Purdue Office of Technology Commercialization. Corey Neu, assistant professor in Purdue's College of Engineering, received $50,000 to support "Critical Advancement to a New AFM/NMR Instrument." It allows researchers to better understand cell movement and physical and chemical properties at a single-cell level.

The University of Washington launched a record 17 startup companies this fiscal year. That makes fiscal 2013 the UW's single most productive year for startup formation. It places the UW among the top five schools in the nation. The center coaches entrepreneurial faculty, students and staff through the commercialization process, offering specialized programs at every step.

Initial Public Offering Nets University of Michigan Pharmaceutical Spinoff More Than $80 Million

A spinoff pharmaceutical company of the University of Michigan Office of Technology Transfer raised nearly $82 million in an initial public offering. OncoMed Pharmaceuticals, now based in Redwood City, Calif., is developing a series of drugs meant to combat the cancer stem cells that are responsible for driving the growth and metastasis of tumors.
