Washington to Invest $37 Million in Nanofabrication Lab Critical to Researchers, Startups
University of Washington
For startup companies looking to make chips with nanoscale features for sequencing DNA or wafers for industrial barcode printing, the equipment costs to fabricate those parts could easily devour every last dollar of seed funding. The same goes for grant-funded researchers designing quantum information devices or microscale sensors to measure cell movement — which is where the Washington Nanofabrication Facility comes in.

UCSF's Precision Medicine Test for Infection

Is it a superbug? A parasite? How about a fungus? Diagnosing an acute infection is a time-pressured guessing game — with doctors often flummoxed over what pathogen is causing a patient's rapidly declining health. The University of California health system, led by UC San Francisco, is using a precision medicine approach to quickly detect infectious disease among patients in its health system. It is using next-gen sequencing and a proprietary algorithm to figure out what virus, bacteria, fungus or parasite is causing a patient's illness.

Purdue Researchers Report Sweet Corn Could Make Animal Vaccines Safer

Animal vaccine manufacturers could benefit from the work of two Purdue University researchers who are testing biomaterial made from sweet corn to make vaccines safer. Harm HogenEsch, a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and Yuan Yao, an associate professor in the College of Agriculture, are developing biomaterial from a nongenetically modified variety of sweet corn to use as an adjuvant in animal vaccines. Adjuvants are substances that are added to vaccines to stimulate an immune response and to improve the performance of vaccines.

Startup 101: More Universities are Trying to Figure Out How to

Yale's Entrepreneurial Institute awarded Umi $15,000 of seed funding, as well as office space alongside nine other student startups in New Haven, Connecticut. They reside in a single room with whiteboard-lined walls where students sprawl on couches with sound-canceling headphones coding on their laptops and where their meals are catered free of charge. Since 2007, Yale's Entrepreneurial Institute has incubated more than 90 startups and raised more than $100 million in investment funding.

AUTM Seeks Proposals for Portal
AUTM
AUTM is seeking proposals for the implementation and hosting of a website for research institutions to list their technologies that are available for licensing. This portal will help facilitate license agreements, collaborative research agreements, and investments or partnership arrangements between the research institutions and corporations and others interested in the technologies.

Interested organizations should submit their completed responses electronically to Paul Stark, AUTM marketing and communications director, by Monday, Aug. 31. Specific questions can be submitted in writing to the executive director and will be responded to as soon as possible.
