Howard Bremer Scholarship Application Deadline Reminder

Don't miss this year's deadline to apply for the AUTM Howard Bremer Scholarship. Applications from students, scholars and new professionals pursuing a career in academic technology transfer will be accepted through Monday, Aug. 17.

The Howard Bremer Scholarship supports students and professionals who are new to the field and pursuing a career in technology transfer. Named to honor our esteemed colleague, a pioneering AUTM member and past president of the association, the scholarship is awarded to those who — like Bremer — wish to bring creativity and innovation to the academic technology transfer profession. The scholarship offers complimentary registration and a travel allowance to attend the AUTM 2016 Annual Meeting, Feb. 14-17, in San Diego.

Virtual Incision Secures $11.2 Million, Led by Bluestem Capital

A startup company built from collaborative research efforts at two University of Nebraska campuses has announced it has secured $11.2 million in equity financing. Virtual Incision Corporation received the investment, led by Bluestem Capital of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with support from existing investors including PrairieGold Venture Partners, also of Sioux Falls. Virtual Incision has also received funding from Nebraska's public-private venture development organization Invest Nebraska.

Carnegie Mellon University, GE Ventures Create Robotics Hub in Pittsburgh

Officials hope a new accelerator program and a $20 million venture fund started by Carnegie Mellon University and GE Ventures will draw the nation's best advanced robotics firms to Pittsburgh and convince those already there to stay put. Carnegie Mellon's National Robotics Engineering Center and GE Ventures, General Electric's investment arm, have teamed up to create The Robotics Hub, an early-stage startup accelerator.

University of Montana Chemist, Inventor Talks About Path to the XPRIZE

When Sunburst Sensors won $1.5 million in prize money last month, the work of Michael DeGrandpre went from the trash bin to the international stage. DeGrandpre is a chemistry professor at the University of Montana whose research led to the creation of Sunburst Sensors, a company that develops chemical sensors for marine and freshwater applications. This week, he said his reputation was on the line when Sunburst entered its sensors into the international XPRIZE, and the company had all hands on deck for the year of the competition.

At University of Montreal, Computer Cursors are Going 3-D

Researchers at the University of Montreal have developed techniques that enable computer cursors to interact in 3-D in single or multiuser, local or remote collaboration scenarios. The system, unveiled at the SIGGRAPH 2015 Conference in Los Angeles, is not so much about turning Word into an IMAX experience as offering designers an opportunity to navigate through and modify their creations manipulating 3-D objects with 3-D interactions.
