Sequestration Ushers in a Dark Age for Science in America
The Huffington Post
VideoBriefOn the first floor of Jordan Hall at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is a 12-by-8 room that, at first glance, looks like a rundown storage space. The floor is a mix of white, teal and purple tiles, in a pattern reminiscent of the 1970s. Trash cans are without tops and half filled. There are rust stains on the tiles, and a loose air vent dangles a bit from the ceiling. It is only when you see four incubators attached to six tanks of carbon dioxide that you get the feeling something more intriguing is taking place here.

Bloomberg
In the past few years, technology companies have spent ludicrous amounts of money to buy patents. But they're discovering, as the drawn-out lawsuits over intellectual property play out, that owning the rights to old inventions may not be worth as much as actually inventing and selling new things.

Tech Executive to Lawmakers: Patent Trolls 'A Massive Problem'
The Hill
Tech startups recently made a case before a House Judiciary Committee panel that current intellectual property laws may be less a form of protection and more a form of protectionism. The firms are asking for help from Congress in fighting patent trolls, which are entities that buy up patents in bulk and threaten to sue other companies for infringement, often causing them to settle in order to avoid a costly lawsuit.
