New Technology Turns Manure Into Clean Water

Imagine something that can turn cow manure into clean water, extract nutrients from that water to serve as fertilizer and help solve the ever-present agricultural problem of manure management. Technology that can do all of that has its roots firmly planted at Michigan State University. Known as the McLanahan Nutrient Separation System, it takes an anaerobic digester, a contraption that takes waste, such as manure, and produces energy as a byproduct, and couples it with an ultrafiltration, air stripping and a reverse osmosis system.

UNC Doubles Tech Licensing Revenue to Record $7.9 Million

Licensing technologies created at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill generated $7,932,921 in income for the university in fiscal year 2014, more than double the highest amount of royalty income the university has received in a single year. The amount comes from licensing revenues by companies that use university-created technology and from the university's sale of stock it holds in successful startups.

Colorado Awarded $412 Million for Sponsored Research in 2013-14
University of Colorado
University of Colorado faculty researchers attracted $861.04 million in research awards in the 2013-14 fiscal year, based on preliminary figures. That total investment in exploration taking place at CU campuses represents a stunning jump of 11.7 percent over the previous year's total, $770.53 million, which came at an especially competitive time for research institutions given tightening federal budgets. Most sponsored research funding comes from federal agencies.

Global Brain Research Initiative Launched

Oregon State Program Speeds Business Growth

Matt Miner, a current Oregon State University student, and Alex Cruft, a recent OSU graduate, recently started a company that makes sunglasses and ski goggles called Bosky Optics. The company is among the dozen or so local startups getting assistance from OSU's Venture Accelerator Program, which is in its second year. The idea is to aid participating businesses that are starting out with mentoring, training, networking, capital investment, interns and even an espresso machine so that are better positioned to succeed.

Data collection is underway for the AUTM FY2014 Salary Survey. Like previous editions, this sixth biennial compensation survey will present robust data gathered from respondents (directors or their designees) at non-profit technology transfer offices.

Completing the survey is not difficult or time consuming, yet the benefits to AUTM members are substantial.

To ensure the confidentiality of the survey data, those of you who requested participation in the survey received an email directly from AUTM's vendor, Peerfocus, with the subject line "2014 AUTM Salary Survey Has Launched" from John Ritter under this email.

UMaine System Identifies Goals for Research Fund

The University of Maine System has released a draft document that lays out specific goals for its Maine Economic Improvement Fund, a result of a June report from the Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability that criticized the university system for not establishing "measurable goals and objectives" for the $15 million annual fund as required by statute.
