Patent Policy is Too Important for Subterfuge and Academic Folly
Universities have become a major source of innovation for local and regional economic development. In the latest AUTM survey, a survey of fiscal year 2013 activity, it is reported that 818 new startup companies were formed to commercialize university research. During FY 2013, there were 5,198 new licenses were granted primarily to small businesses. Since 1980, more than 10,000 new startup companies have been established to develop and market academic research, with 4,206 startups still operating as of the end of FY 2013.
AnalySwift Launches Purdue Software to Speed Modeling of Composite Materials, Structures
Manufacturers and engineering firms in the advanced composites sector can now use new software developed at Purdue University to reduce the design cycle of materials and structures, and analyze models too complex for existing methods. AnalySwift LLC, a commercial software provider, has launched SwiftComp, technology that provides efficient, high-fidelity modeling of composites and reduces analysis times without a loss of accuracy, while capturing details of composites that were unreachable using traditional methods. The company licensed the technology, which was developed by Wenbin Yu, associate professor in Purdue's School of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
UC Merced Connect: MESA Lab Students Gaining Recognition
Professor YangQuan Chen has many reasons to be proud of his Mechatronics, Embedded Systems and Automation Lab. Besides being extremely popular — so popular the lab has to turn away applicants — the lab now has nine Federal Aviation Administration certificates to fly unmanned aerial vehicles around the Central Valley. But perhaps the best reason is the success of the students, who are being recognized and honored for the work they do in the MESA Lab.
Flu Study, On Hold, Yields New Vaccine Technology

Vaccines to protect against an avian influenza pandemic as well as seasonal flu may be mass produced more quickly and efficiently using technology described today by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the journal Nature Communications. The new method for making flu vaccines using cell culture was devised using a type of research that has since been paused by the federal government, which is formulating regulations for how some viruses can be manipulated.
