Buffalo Biotech Startup Sells Rights to Potential Muscular
Dystrophy Treatment

The Buffalo News
Tonus Therapeutics, a Buffalo biotech startup company that is pursuing a treatment for a form of muscular dystrophy based on a protein found in tarantula venom, has sold the rights to the drug to Akashi Therapeutics, a Cambridge, Massachusetts, clinical stage biopharmaceutical firm.

UCF Reports Record $145.6 Million in Research Funding in FY14
University of Central Florida
Researchers at the University of Central Florida set a new record in funded research in fiscal year 2014, receiving $145.6 million, 30 percent more than the previous year. The funding totals reflect successful collaborations with industry, a record total for federal defense grants and continued growth in commercialization and innovation activity.

Purdue Welcomes 24 New Startup Companies

Starting a business can be hard. Just ask startup company Spero Energy's Ian Klein. Spero Energy is one of 24 startup companies using technology licensed at Purdue University named in this year's "Class of 2014." That number is up from just eight companies last year. Spero uses woody biomass to make chemicals that can be used in the flavor and fragrance industry. Klein said the company is on the road to success because of help from the university.

UH Forms Partnership With Foundation Fighting Blindness to Speed Treatments to Market

The Harrington Discovery Institute at University Hospitals has announced that it has joined with the Foundation Fighting Blindness in Columbia, Maryland, which was co-founded by former Cleveland Cavaliers owner Gordon Gund in 1971, to form a new initiative for fighting blindness.

Partnership Will Tackle Innovative Methods of Converting Food Wastes

The nonprofit group Energy Excelerator has announced its selection of 17 grantee companies for 2015, its largest cohort to date. Among its grantees is the partnership between the University of Hawaii at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources Bioenergy and Environment Research Group and the bioconversion company, ProtaCulture LLC, which was selected from a pool of over 250 applicants.

AUTM Announces BWP Contest Winner for September
AUTM
Skip Cynar, licensing officer at the University of California, San Diego, won a $100 gift certificate during the AUTM BWP 500 contest for September. The new initiative, available exclusively to AUTM members, is designed to help the association reach its goal of 500 technologies in the Better World Project database by the 2015 Annual Meeting.

AUTM members who enter technologies into the database during this monthly contest will be eligible to win a $100 gift certificate. In addition, their technologies will be considered for Featured Stories — professionally written articles hosted on the BWP website and promoted via AUTM’s various media outlets.
