University of South Florida Launches Ground-Breaking Revenue Incentive Program

The University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, Fla., has announced a ground-breaking Revenue Incentive Patent Cost Sharing Program for their university inventors. The Revenue Incentive program, one of the first of its kind among U.S. universities, provides a way for USF innovators to invest in the future of the inventions resulting from their research.

Innovation Center of the Rockies Signs Commercialization Agreement with University of Wyoming

The Innovation Center of the Rockies, a Boulder, Colorado-based organization created to help research institutions commercialize technology, has entered into an agreement with the University of Wyoming (UW). UW is the first commercialization partner outside the state of Colorado for the nonprofit Innovation Center of the Rockies, which has inked similar deals with several Colorado universities. The new partner agreement comes two weeks after the Center received a national award for its efforts in commercializing university research and intellectual property.

Tech Transfer Office Hits All-Time Record at University of Michigan

Anyone who has ever feared getting a flu shot should thank University of Michigan's Office of Technology Transfer and FluMist, a painless alternative to the flu shot. FluMist was one of the inventions developed in a 20-year-old university program that helps faculty members and researchers develop and commercialize inventions and companies. The university's Office of Technology Transfer reported that it had harbored a record 421 new inventions in the 2013 fiscal year.

Utah State Opens Facility to Scale Up Commercialization Potential of Synthetic Spider Silk

The Utah State University has opened a Bioproducts Scale-Up Facility at the center of its Innovation Campus to maximize the commercialization potential of synthetic spider silk. The 70,000-square-feet facility will house production equipment that will enable the researchers at Utah State to produce large volumes of the spider silk protein, originally developed at the institution's science technology and research facility.

University at Buffalo Receives $4.7 Million DOE Grant for Assistive Technology
University at Buffalo
The University at Buffalo Center for Assistive Technology (CAT) has received a $4.7 million competitive award from the U.S. Department of Education’s National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitative Research (NIDRR). The 2013-18 award was announced as CAT celebrates its 25th anniversary and brings the total amount of extramural support generated by the center to about $100 million since its founding in 1988.

Multimillion-Dollar Grant Addresses Region's Transportation Infrastructure

The University of Oklahoma will lead the Southern Plains Regional Transportation Center (SPRTC), a University Transportation Center funded by a $2.6 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. United States patent number 7,023,435 almost didn't happen. The application, which covered a way of imaging a surface, was rejected four times by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. But the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, which filed the patent, fought back — and prevailed.
