University of Michigan's Office of Tech Transfer reported that 368 new inventions were reported in fiscal year 2012, comfortably eclipsing last year's then-record total of 332. Scientists have been trying for a long time to deliver vaccines without needles. Now Merck is exploring a technology from the University of Queensland in Australia that addresses this challenge. Merck has agreed to pay an upfront fee, and additional research funding to test Nanopatch technology. Financial terms aren't being disclosed, but as part of the deal, Merck has also gotten an exclusive license to use the technology to help develop an undisclosed vaccine candidate in the Merck pipeline. Formerly an annually printed book, the Better World Report is now a Web-based publication that celebrates real-world examples of how academic research benefits humankind. Fresh stories are published each month. The committee is now seeking additional stories to be professionally written and featured in the future.
