$200 Billion Could Be Added to Economic Output Annually by Unlocking Patents
IPWatchdog
Americans have long celebrated many things, but one of them has been our incredible ability to continue innovating. Much of what it means to be a modern society is due to innovations made or commercialized most successfully first in this country. The telephone, the automobile, the airplane, computers and software to operate them, air conditioning and the Internet were all commercialized by entrepreneurs in the U.S. Patents have been and remain critical to incentivizing innovation, which in turn is key to sustaining economic growth and increasing living standards.

Cancer Research at Wichita State Could Reduce Side Effects from Chemotherapy
Wichita State University
Wichita State University researchers are working on a new system that could decrease the negative effects of cancer drugs on patients. WSU professors Ramazan Asmatulu, Paul Wooley and Shang-You Yang — along with several graduate students — are collaborating on research that involves the use of nanotechnology in helping patients undergoing cancer treatment. With that technology, the group has created nanomaterials and developed a magnetic-targeted drug delivery system with the goal of localizing as much as possible the cancer drugs to the tumor sites and therefore decreasing the negative effects of the drugs on the body.

A Billion Holes Can Make a Battery
University of Maryland via R&D Magazine
Researchers at the University of Maryland have invented a single tiny structure that includes all the components of a battery that they say could bring about the ultimate miniaturization of energy storage components. The structure is called a nanopore: a tiny hole in a ceramic sheet that holds electrolyte to carry the electrical charge between nanotube electrodes at either end. The existing device is a test, but the bitsy battery performs well. First author Chanyuan Liu, a graduate student in materials science and engineering, says that it can be fully charged in 12 minutes, and it can be recharged thousands of times.
