Technology transfer offices often focus their efforts on intellectual property (IP) from the physical and life sciences, areas well-suited for patent protection. IP from the social sciences, liberal arts and business schools, on the other hand, is frequently declared an exempted scholarly work and not the type of IP around which licensing programs are built. Consequently, many universities often overlook this significant percentage of their clientele. A Creative Works program may require a different skill set for licensing professionals, but the engagement with a more diverse faculty, increased invention disclosures, new licensing opportunities and industry relationships, and additional royalty generation can be rewarding. In short, effective Creative Works programs can make the technology transfer office more relevant to all parts of your campus.
A panel of Creative Works experts will explore establishing a technology transfer office creative works program, including defining "Creative Works" and how they differ from technical inventions; developing a rationale for a Creative Works program and its value; identifying Creative Works on campus; programmatic elements including policy considerations, effective invention disclosures, standardized licensing venues; and project management for licensing the various IP elements of Creative Works such as copyrights and trademarks.

There is often the assumption that all university research is "basic" research, when in reality it is becoming increasingly common for "applied" research (that is research that seeks to provide a solution to a real-world problem) to be developed on campuses. One can simply turn to their local grocery store (Clearfield rice — Louisiana State University), pharmacy (nicotine patch — University of California; antihistamine drug Allegra — Georgetown University) or doctor's office (CyberKnife — Stanford University) for examples of how university inventions improve our lives and the lives of the world around us.

For startup companies, the difference between success and failure may be simple to identify — generating the capital needed to keep the lights on while developing a product for market. But finding that funding is often tenuous and challenging. "There's this 'valley of death' when you're trying to raise money and go to market," according to Clark Cahoon, fund manager for Utah's Technology Commercialization and Innovation Program. "We hope to bridge that gap."
