The U.S. Labor department says the number of people applying for unemployment benefits has spiked to the highest level in three months, but the Mobile, Ala.,
area is showing a ray of hope. David Amerson is used to hard work, but lately it's been hard to find. Amerson said, "I grew up in the construction world, and that just completely dropped off." However, in the middle of the country's cash crisis, pipe welding jobs are white hot. Alabama workforce officials say most jobs in the maritime are in high demand right now, including welding.

The recent sale of a welding business' parent company could mean changes at the Hanover, Pa., area plant, but officials have been unwilling to comment on just what the deal might bring. Colfax Corp., which is based in Fulton, Md., announced it has agreed to pay about $14.45 per share, for Dublin-based Charter, in a deal worth $2.4 billion in cash and stock.
