US industrial production rises at fastest pace in 3 months; consumer prices fall

U.S. manufacturing is recovering from a slump, and inflation may be peaking. Data point to an economy growing slowly but steadily. Still, surging oil prices and a possible European recession threaten to drain the economy’s momentum. Output at the nation's factories, utilities and mines rose 0.7 percent last month, the Federal Reserve said. It was the fastest growth in three months. More

The pro-job environment in right-to-work states is paying off with new automotive jobs. Tennessee is the home of Volkswagen’s new $1 billion auto assembly plant, as well as plants operated by Nissan and GM. Alabama boasts billion-dollar plants operated by Mercedes-Benz, Honda and Hyundai. Texas enjoys a large automotive manufacturing presence with Peterbilt, GM, International and Toyota. One reason for these states’ growing success in the automotive industry is their strong right-to-work laws. More

October's manufacturing output increased 0.5 percent

Up 4.1 percent from last year's level, manufacturing output increased 0.5 percent in October, the Federal Reserve announced. The factory operating rate moved up to 75.4 percent, a rate 11 percentage points above its trough in June 2009 but still 3.6 percentage points below its long-run average. More

Boeing Co. won a provisional order, worth $21.7 billion at list prices, from Indonesian budget carrier Lion Air for 230 of its 737 aircraft in what would be a record transaction for the U.S. planemaker. The commitment consists of 201 of the new 737 MAX model, which features upgraded engines, and 29 extended-range 737-900s, according to a statement. President Barack Obama attended a signing ceremony for the deal in Bali, Indonesia, which coincided with a summit of Southeast Asian leaders. More

Pashley, oldest British bicycle maker, still manufacturing in England

Chrysler said it would add 1,100 jobs at a sport utility vehicle plant in Toledo, Ohio as it spends $1.7 billion developing new models for its Jeep brand. The new jobs, to be filled in 2013, amount to more than half of the 2,100 that Chrysler committed to creating under the four-year labor agreement that its unionized workers ratified in October. More

When Betty Jo Fain was a homeless woman struggling with a drug and alcohol problem, the last thing she imagined was being the face for an advertising campaign promoting jobs at a naval shipbuilding company. Her face is that face for Austal USA in Mobile, Ala., the shipbuilding company where she works as a welder and hopes to one day be the company's first female foreman of fabrication. More

Toyota Motor Co. has opened a new $800 million vehicle manufacturing plant, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, in Mississippi. The new plant will have an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles, will produce the Corolla, and plans to hire about 2,000 employees in 2012. More

Governor says South Dakota needs more workers in skilled trades

Gov. Dennis Daugaard says South Dakota needs to change the perception of skilled trades to help deal with a shortage of workers. Daugaard told those at a workforce summit in Mitchell, S.D., that students need to be encouraged to go into trades such as welding, plumbing and electrical. He says the perception of those careers as being somewhat less desirable needs to change. More

Rockwell eyes manufacturing plant in Brazil

Rockwell Automation said that it has begun construction on a facility that will double the industrial machinery maker's manufacturing capacity in Brazil. The plant is being built in the city of Jundiai, near Sao Paulo. It's slated to start production by the end of next summer, the company said. More
