The arrival of the wind energy industry to Iowa provided a lift at a time the state was feeling the loss of some legacy employers and just ahead of the national recession, which eroded some of the state's manufacturing base. While new investment in the wind sector has slowed of late, advocates of the renewable energy and economic development leaders still see potential for more wind turbine manufacturers and suppliers to plant roots in Iowa.

Tom Corbett announced the formation of a new public-private council to identify and prioritize top issues that can sustain and advance manufacturing in the state. BOC Bangladesh Ltd. was rebranded as Linde Bangladesh Ltd., with an eye on a more market share in the country. Linde Group, Germany's industrial gases and engineering company, acquired UK-based competitor BOC Group in 2006. The rebranding in Bangladesh is part of Linde's global program to unite the companies under the brand, Erphan Shehabul Matin, managing director of Linde Bangladesh, said in a press briefing.

Matheson announced plans to build a new large capacity air separation unit to meet the growing demand for merchant liquid oxygen and nitrogen in North Dakota. The plant is expected to be on stream, producing high-purity merchant product, during the third quarter of 2012. "This new air separation unit will help support the strong economic growth in North Dakota and surrounding areas and allow Matheson to better support our current merchant liquid customers," says Butch Miller, senior vice president, bulk division.

October crude steel production up 6.2 percent over last year

World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association was 124 million metric tons in October. This is 6.2 percent higher than October 2010. China's crude steel production for October was 54.7 million metric tons, an increase of 9.7 percent compared to October 2010.

Caterpillar moves manufacturing facility from Japan to North America

As part of a strategic decision to move production closer to the majority of customers who use these products, Caterpillar Inc. has announced plans to open a new manufacturing facility in North America for small track-type tractors and mini hydraulic excavators. The company hopes to make a final decision on the new facility’s location by the end of this year with construction to begin in the first half of 2012. The decision to shift production from Japan is driven by proximity to a large base of customers in North America and Europe.

North American-based robotics companies are having one of their best years ever, with orders up 41 percent through September, according to the latest report from the Robotics Industries Association as reported by Plastics Today. A total of 13,616 robots valued at $848.5 million were ordered in the first nine months by companies in North America. When orders to companies outside North America are included, the totals rise to 15,683 robots with a value of $968 million.
